I realize he is 7 foot, but can he play center any more than PJ can? I mean if he is basically a tall power forward I'm not sure what the fit is? As somebody who thinks Flagg best position is power forward, sees Rez as the guy to swing between 4/5 and thinks this team is desperate for creation, I'm struggling with it. It would have made a lot more sense to me if Mavs had drafted Burries instead of Morez.
Again...let's see what this looks like when they're "done" for the summer.
If they're a Simons signing away from being done right now and that's what we find out, well, I'll grab my pitchfork and fall right in line behind you.

I will wait before I make any final judgements, but my point was I'm not sure I like his long term fit with Flagg and Rez regardless of how the current roster pans out.

Oh...I disagree with that part, then. I think he's a great fit if you only look at those two next to him. Almost ideal, in fact...IF you're looking at all three in a 4/5 sort of rotation. But, I also think that group, together, is among the better options for a bigger lineup I've seen around here.

Counting stats don't tell the whole story, obviously. I don't know what kind of gravity Aldama provides, but he does have a slightly higher 3Pr rate than PJW. Which is impressive considering PJ is one of the league leaders there at PF.
PJ has the higher percentage. 35.4% to 34.6%
More seasons shooting over 36.1% (league average). 4 to 1
PJ has had 3 seasons that are better than Aldima's career best.
Now back to the loony bin I go

PJ also has several more seasons with a significantly lower 3-point percentage than Aldama. Every season in the NBA, Aldama has hit 35% or better except for his rookie year where he only played 32 games. Plus his PPG have increased every year in the NBA (now at 14 ppg)
Aldama was in Spain for two years. His rookie season wasn't much of anything there. His second season, he shot 45% from three on low volume. He's only 25 years old.

The stat I heard for Aldama is 36% on 5 attempts per game (on non-starter minutes) over the last three seasons. I think the weird, tanking season, during which he played the fewest games is what you're using, but ultimately it doesn't matter. I'm very familiar with PJW's game (love it, for the most part) and all I know about Aldama is the 5-6 hours of highlights and game footage I watched last night. 15 minutes into that I could tell he's a better shooter and ball handler than PJW - not a better PLAYER (I want to be clear), but a better SHOOTER.
For one thing, it didn't take long to see that Aldama has been taking tough threes. Shots off of movement, shots from all over the court. Even contested ones, pretty frequently. More than half of PJW's 3-point attempts have been open, stand-still shots (feet already set) from the corner.
I don't want to get into a huge debate about this, and I never said YOU were crazy. You're one of the saner folks around here. But, I do NOT agree with your assessment that these two players are similar shooters, or that PJW might even be a better shooter. I very much disagree with that, and think it's a crazy take.
I also don't want this to come across like an anti-PJW post, because it's not. All I'm saying is that IF you think creating space around Flagg in a variety of different ways should be a priority (and my goodness, I DO), then I think Aldama is a good step in that direction, and will help more with that, specific goal than a few of the rotation front court players here (not just PJW).

Aldama is probably a better shooter but his point still stands.
PJ = "can't shoot."
Aldama: "we finally got a shooting big"
stats: uhhhh

Absolutely. I get all of that. The point isn't to tear down Aldama, it's to show how the perception of PJW is not really aligned with reality. Both are good shooters.

Well...and PJW is the name we've heard in trade talks the LEAST, right?
Mix that in with the idea that all of their targets this summer, Sasser, Aldama, possibly Simons and even Morez Johnson, potentially...can shoot. I'm starting to feel like this front office values spacing, that's all.

Wow!
That's interesting. The Mavs are quietly and quickly becoming a very Euro-friendly team again.

If there's a difference between the two shooter's, it's this. Aldami's game is almost everywhere on the court facing the basket and shooting from a variety of distances. He appears to hunt for any perimeter shot if he's open. That's not PJ's game who does his best work down low. PJ shoots from the perimeter on catch-and-shoot corner threes and occasionally from the elbow - and is a very good rebounder and player inside. They are both good. But as Killer mentioned, there's a real difference in spacing and how defenses will defend these players.

I mentioned this guy in another thread. There's some nice video of him. I'd love to see him here for SL play.

I guess they have similar percentages and this may not be fair to PJ, but, I don't think teams care if PJ shoots open threes at all. Not sure the same is for Santi. While his percentage may be similar, I think teams view him as a more dangerous shooter.

Well said (better than I sad it, for sure), thanks.
And, since, as we all know, MY preference is for Cooper Flagg to have the ball more "inside"...

Khris return has not been ruled out.
This is not a knock against Stein, but I don't put much stock in his Mavs reports. I don't think he is making things up but he is getting stuff from agents probably. A quick nugget the Mavs have interest in Simons may pump up some urgency from another team or two. I don't think anything is leaking from Dallas.

Stein (
@TheSteinLine
) believes Josh Broghamer and Phil Handy will remain on Dusty May's coaching staff.
Frank Vogel is no longer with the Mavs, and Jay Triano is expected to join Micah Nori's staff in Portland.
