Trade & Free Agency 2026/2027
(07-01-2026, 07:05 PM)KillerLeft Wrote: What do the analytics nerds have to say about Aldama?

I'm trying to get excited...again...young, long, moves ok and most importantly CAN SHOOT. But, I'm struggling with this a little.

He’s an average player that is new and shiny and we can get very excited about, and pin our hopes and dreams on.

Then, after his first 2 of 8 shooting night, we can label him the second coming of THJ, and blame him for all the failures of the franchise.

Does that help?

Something of note regarding salaries.  Aldama is TO for next season and Sasser is RFA.  So both are controlled if they do work and flexible if they don’t.  So, good financial work.

I think the view of what Morez is determines where the glut in the roster is.  I actually think Aldama makes sense from a roster standpoint as a backup PF if Morez is a center and PJ/Aldama and Flagg/Naji are your forwards. Center is crowded if Lively is healthy and you might conclude Gafford should be outgoing depending on Lively.

If Morez is a PF, then PJ is the excess guy.  With the salaries committed to everyone it is hard to argue Morez can be the first big off the bench and play two positions unless someone goes.

@YossiGozlan

I could see the Isaiah Stewart, Isaiah Joe, John Collins, & Santi Aldama trades expand into a five-team trade between the Pistons, Grizzlies, Clippers, Mavericks, & Thunder.

Pistons need to send out $20M to match for Collins & Joe.

Stewart ($15M) & Marcus Sasser ($5.2M) work.

+1. Exactly how I see it as well.

4 years is an eternity in the NBA. One of the reasons I don’t engage in “timelines” talk.

I've been meaning to start a thank you, goodbye, good luck thread.

Idk...if he makes himself available as a potential coaching hire, the Mavericks will likely have some competition for his services. Lots of teams are looking for a "how to get hit in the face in literally any on-court situation" developmental coach these days.

A rebuilding team (Memphis, Charlotte) would be smart to sign him to the roster just to teach the youngsters how to be pros and to build team culture.

If nothing else, there is the timeline of now (spend assets on vets to win now) and later (don't burn assets on win now vets).  Mavs are firmly in that second timeline, which is why I would have been pissed if they had spent those assets for Kawhi.

They certainly spent assets. A FRP and 2 SRP’s on an oft-injured Big is not nothing. Sure, he’s 25... So it’s reasonable on that front. But he’s not a starter. Or at least he hasn’t been. 82 starts in 278 career games.

Most on here have already labeled him a great shooter, but he’s worse than PJ.

PJW 35.4% on 4.8 attempts per game.

Aldama 34.6% on 4.1 attempts per game.

I will root for him, but acting like assets weren’t spent and that he’s the shooting 4 we need next to Flagg is something…

I think timeline talk is silly. Shouldn’t we be getting future assets in a rebuild if that were the case?

I like the putting pieces around cooper that aren’t taking away from him mindset. Reminds me of roster building before all the super teams. Build around his strengths and weaknesses and let him be him. My only thing is I know he can handle the ball and be a point forward type but I’d like to see him get the ball in the “Dirk Spots” he’d be so lethal there. But maybe that comes down the line.

Well, that was a depressing read.

Really need the Mavs’ real keynote off-season trade/FA move to drop. Unfortunately, as I myself said earlier, M&M are working at their pace, not mine or anyone else’s.

Really need Simons, Monk, or Mathurin in the next day or two. Or a similarly-skilled guard.

Santi presents another look at C.

We don't know how Morez would look at C and if he can shoot from the outside in the NBA.
Lively isn't playing.
Gafford for whatever time he has left as a Mav would just be a DLive duplicate or a Morez duplicate.

So this is a good get for the Mavs.
The price is a fake first on 2030 and some second round picks? Totally justifiable. Three lowly picks that can amount to nothing and it's not like the Mavs can't conjure up picks in the future.

It looks like they will be using part of the MLE* to acquire Sasser, which means it has to wait until the new league year begins.

*EDIT - Looking closer at the numbers, they are more likely using the BAE. Which means their entire 15.0M MLE should still be intact, if they wish to use it. And they have about 19M in room under the tax.

While I don't see it happening, LeBron anyone, for the MLE? He would fit their needs and preferences real well (and his addition might even instantly bump them into the upper tier).
