They had to placate one of the larger media markets in the NBA, which was ready to riot, and which was seriously screwed over by an inept GM trading one of the game's best players in an under-the-table deal that was akin to two ships passing in the night. JMHO.
In a way, it was in the cards. We had moved down so often in the draft, I think the odds would eventually favor a move in the other direction.

Odds don't really work that way. I'm highly skeptical the NBA manipulates the draft, but there have been enough incidents (like the Mavs getting first after the Luka debacle) that I get the sentiment.

Ever since CLE got the #1 pick the year LBJ went pro, I've felt like there was a thumb on the lottery scale.

Prior results don't impact future results. The Mavs had a 1.8% to get Flagg, and that is not impacted by the fact that they lost many times in the past. The idea that "they were due" is a logical fallacy.

Just so we're clear, I was talking about the odds going down in the draft every single year. It would appear that the odds are random since they are picked from a bucket. Eventually, in some random year, someone will pick the Mavs higher than they are assigned rather than lower.
My head hurts. I don't think we can manage a long discussion on this. Or I can't

Not sure his defense will let him be an NBA player, but Poulakidas sure is fun to watch.

I'm glad he's been decent. We could use his shooting.

I think he has played himself into consideration for a two way next year. I have not seen the recent games but my first impression of him was positive. Even minus the shooting. He moves on offense, tries hard on D and adds to a team doing little things. Nice end of the year find. Has a chance to at least be a two way guy next year.
On the other hand, AJ will not be back next year. No reason to keep him just because he has another year left on his contract. He is so far away from being a positive nba player. Just not sure where he is ever going to get the reps he needs.

Looks like we're going to need a nickname for him Poulikidas.

Tries hard, but he is a turnstile on defense. I love, love, love his supreme confidence. I'm not sure how well having the greenest of green lights will work out for him when he plays with a better cast around him which could paint him in a selfish light, but I love that he is doing it now as this is his opportunity. I want to see more of him for sure.
Agreed on AJ and we haven't seen much out of Smith.
I've been pretty down on Nembhard, but he's played little better of late. His size and lack of elite traits make me iffy on him.
I like Cisse's energy and athleticism but he's a bit painful to watch on the offensive end. I'd put him in my iffy category.
Bagley's been a very pleasant surprise. And this is the guy I wanted to draft but didn't want on this team at the TDL. I wonder if we could lock him up for a few years on the cheap.

Christian Clark provides 5 names to watch out for as the Mavs next GM in his latest athletic article:
Bob Myers- some skepticism if he would leave CA and his current role with Harris Blitzer sports. Clark says it would be a home run hire. Has worked with Weltz.
Tim Connelly-Mavs president Ethan Casson worked with him in Minnesota. Has one year left on his contract and it is unclear if Minny would let him interview with Dallas.
Masai Ujiri-Clark says the brash ad charismatic Ujii would have no problem with the public facing part of the job, an area Harrison struggled. He owns a stake in Toronto G league team starting next year. Has made comments he wants to win another NBA championship.
Dennis Lindsey- Cuban is backing him and sources say this could hurt Lindsey's case. Lindsey is second in command to Trajan Langdon in Det.
Matt Ricardi- Clark seems to think this is a long shot, but Mavs has stressed they will consider in house candidates. Dumont seems pleased with the Davis trade.

I think defense is so hard for rookies. Especially one who comes in near the end of the year playing with a group of mismatch parts. Cooper should be an elite defender in time, but you have seen him struggle with just how good these NBA players are. I look for is guys who are smart and pick things up quickly. Mostly off ball stuff. You can stick around just being a really good off ball defender and being in the right spot. Even if you have limitations in one on one guarding. Do you have mental mistakes or make dumb fouls that lead to free throws or get you in the penalty? You can see who gets it and who doesn't. Not saying John gets it but that is the things I am looking for with young players. I think Nembhard is good with this. His size will always be a huge limitation but he typically does the right thing on defense.

Noah Weber on The Smoking Cuban is reporting that Tim Connelly could be a primary target, depending on how MIN does in the playoffs. I don't know that they are expected to go very deep, so he might be open to a discussion. Apparently still has a year left on his current contract.
MIN has a FRP this summer that is involved in some kind of complicated pick swap scheme. They also have a couple of SRPs with similar complications, but may end up being late picks.
No 2027 FRP and one SRP. They have a decent starting 5 + a couple of OK bench players, but there's not a lot else there. They are just under the first apron, but will likely go over that if they re-sign Dosunmu and add even vet min contracts for the rest. They only have 9 contracts for next season, two of which are 33 y/o Gobert and 31 y/o Randle. Dosunmu would make 10, so there are slots to fill. I guess they could do some 1-for-2 trades, but that's usually just salary dumping.
I guess Connelly could be interested in trying to build another contender in DAL, having Coop as the keystone is a good start.
Is this guy an acceptable candidate if Presti/Myers/Lindsey aren't available?

Detroit has Minnesota's 26 protected FRP swap in the Jaden Ivey trade.

Apologies if this has been posted already. Here's Bobby Marks' offseason guide for the Mavs. Most of us already know almost all of this, of course, but I did think he had some good thoughts on Lively's next contract.

Most smart people had those thoughts about the extension of Porzingis, then Cuban gave him five fully guaranteed years with a player option. LOL.

The threshold was: Are the fans killing me online? Is somebody spitting in my coffee today? Nope. Everything calm. Job well done Riccardi.
