I think the Mavs front office is in a really bad negotiating position. Between injuries and underperformance, the value(s) of all our bigs is dropping. Everyone else in the NBA knows this roster doesn't work and they need to reshuffle it.
Not sure they're in the position to be making demands like "we want you to take Caleb Martins contract and give us Jalen Smith in this deal as sweeteners" or "we're going to need the NOLA unprotected 26 in this trade." I foresee some Porzingis type trades going down.

Then you play out the lost season. It’s pretty simple to me at least.

ADs trade value isn’t going to get any better. He’s headed towards the Porzingis type return.

I like Moody. I think he's a slightly better version Christie, due to superior size, strength and slightly more of an edge. Christie is showing signs of increasing his offensive bag, but it's pretty hit or miss, and Moody can shoot. I think Moody might be able to handle a starting role a bit better, so this would probably be an upgrade, and it might even be good trade value, but the Mavs DO have Christie, currently, so it's not the 911 situation right now, imo.
Coby White makes the list because he's a threat WITH THE BALL. That's what the Mavs need more than anything, imho. Naji Marshall isn't suddenly playing better, he's finally found himself on a team so desperate for ball-handling he has a constant carte blanche to do his thing out there. It's cool that he has some game with the ball, but we're seeing the results in the W-L column.
Coby is the better offensive player, but he is not a PG, can't play a lick of defense and is looking to get paid. No doubt he will make this team better this season (which at this point could be considered a negative) but I'm not sure he is a guy this org should be making a big long term commitment to.
I think Moody is a significantly better defender than Max. He is a couple years younger than White, on a good contract for the next two and half years, and I think makes more sense as a long term piece even if he doesn't address the teams desperate need for creation.

Different situation. KP was a net negative and they felt they had to get rid of him. Worst case you just hold onto AD until he regains value or when he becomes an expiring.

Gafford for Moody and TJD. Jackson-Davis is that center who can get you 16-20 minutes, but isn't so expensive that you don't mind sitting him if AD and Lively are healthy.
Moody is the backup/PT starting guard compensation for backup/PT starting center Gafford. His advanced numbers look better than some of the guys we talk about at the position (White, Simons et al). We have to cut Exum to do this and both teams are so tight to the 2nd apron that there aren't too many alternative versions unless this is part of a larger Kuminga deal where GSW takes back less than they send out.
Never mind. Based on what we saw from Gafford against GSW, there is no way in the world the Warriors make this trade.

Yeah, it doesn't seem like he's the type of player they'd be interested in, even at his best. Lively is more their type of dude.
I think Indiana is a dream fit for Gafford, honestly. Best thing for both the team and player. There are other good fits, of course. LAL, for one, but I doubt we'll see any deals between DAL and LAL anytime soon.

Yeah, and that is where most of the smoke is as well. Several players I would not mind trading Gafford for on that roster. I am skeptical we could get Mathurin or Nembhard, but I would do Nesmith at this point.

You could do a lot worse than Nesmith as a forward complement to Flagg. A lot worse.

The contract scared me off a little, but I guess it's reasonable compared to what Mathurin wants. The fact that his extension doesn't kick in until 27-28 really helps with the tax/apron issues next year.
25-26: $11m
26-27: $11m
27-28: $19.4m
28-29: $21m

I was a little concerned, but he will still be in his prime during length of that contract and those last two years won't be that much more than the full MLE. Not a bad price to pay for a quality 3&D player who can score more than a low volume 3 point shooter.
