This time a year from now, Klay, Naji and Hardy are $33mm worth of expiring (or TO) contracts

I hope it's not just a simple waiving of Williams, and there's something better coming to clear the way (without involving a pick).

It's a good move if Exum can stay healthy. He has a lot of nagging injuries like AD.

Legler commented that he thought Dallas might make its BIG move next season instead of this season.  Get Kyrie back, see how he is and decide what you need.  Not a terrible theory.

Yes, that should have always been the thought process.  Now if a move you can't turn down presents itself than you give it serious thought.

Although, even if the team thinks they know the answers, they really don't.   They don't know what Flagg is and will become.  They don't know if AD can thrive playing PF while elevating our centers, and they don't know how Kyrie looks when he returns.  A hole now, may not be a hole next year.   Next year the holes may look different then they do now.   A trade will need to happen, but making that trade now is more of an educated guess what they really need.

Seems like a year from now, they'll have a much better picture of each one's value to the team, and team needs.

I'll predict that Klay is done, but Marshall will retain value.

I can't believe they will release B will to get him on a two way. They need those three bodies at point. Non are perfect and all have warts, but they need all three on the roster. I would be interested to see how the team views Hardy with two years left, Powell expiring and rookie Omax on the priority level. I assume they would probably be fine moving any, but I wonder who of the three they would least like to give up.

SG is going to be a huge need next year (if not already a need).    I think if Klay sticks around the following year he is a backup 3.   I am not sure if Max will ever be more than a good high rotation bench player.   They really need that 6'5 guy who can defend, create some and hit open threes.  Maybe this need changes, but I think it is a glaring hole.

Are you reporting news?

If you are only trying to understand Exum fit,  I heard "Omax outgoing via trade tbd" is their goal. Deadline isn't until Oct and I suspect other trades besides a pure player dump are likely being explored too.

Obviously waiving BW is an easy backup plan but I think they will keep him and find a diff solution somehow.

I think so too. Given Exum's injury history, I think BWill is pretty important. I just don't think Hardy should get Exum's minutes if Exum gets injured. BWill is better security.

And there's no good way to give Omax minutes. He only really plays one position, and that position is coveted by three starter-types in PJ, Flagg, and AD. Hopefully the Mavs can get something for him like a 2nd round pick.

Could be either an improvement of the first unit or an upgrade of the bench. I have a hard time with the former option, but for bench upgrades there are endless possibilities.

I would still say that the ballhandlers are pretty much set, so wings and big man need to worry now. Namely Martin, Hardy, Marshall, Christie, OMax and of course DP.

If something happens, I wouldn't be surprised if more players go out than in and the last spot would be filled with Kessler Edwards or Kai Jones.

Shamgod gone...

"As expected, Mavericks player development coach God Shammgod has reached a deal with the Magic to become an assistant on Jamahl Mosley‘s staff, reports Shams Charania of ESPN (Twitter link). Rumors about Orlando’s interest in Shammgod, who had been in Dallas since 2019, had circulated since mid-June".

..."With Shammgod departing, keep an eye on Phil Handy and Mike Penberthy as possible candidates to join the Mavericks‘ staff under Jason Kidd, according to Stein (Twitter links). Both Handy and Penberthy were part of the Lakers’ staff alongside Kidd when Frank Vogel – Dallas’ new lead assistant – was the head coach in Los Angeles."

If I were trying to have this level of expiring contracts for outgoing next summer (along with picks), then I’d be focused on Powell, OMax and Martin as the outgoing in any deal now.  We hear a lot about Powell and OMax.  We don’t hear much about Martin.

But, if you think about it, he’s probably the one most impacted by our lottery luck.  Cooper Flagg pushes him out of the top 10 in the rotation with everyone healthy.  Someone taken around #11 wouldn’t have done that.  Obviously, they didn’t know they were getting Flagg and envisioned a bigger role for Martin than the one that is available.  I just wonder why we don’t hear more from Stein et al about Martin.  Martin + either OMax or Powell would fit into another teams MLE…but how has an MLE and two open roster spots at this point.

I hope so too.  For those keeping score, BWill guarantees for $200k on 7/7.  He guarantees for $850k on opening night and is fully guaranteed on 1/10/26.  They gave themselves some flexibility when they did the deal.

That's why I've moved off of thinking the Mavs would use Gafford for an upgrade and thought more about where Martin could go. To me it's probably less about 'positional need', I just think it's a consolidation of players for a clear upgrade to the top 10, while also clearing a roster spot(s). That's why I've been focused on the Herb Jones deal.

The Pels roster is just as unbalanced as the Mavs, except I think the Mavs want, and like their current construction. I don't see Nico going after a ball-dominant guard any time soon, just a 6'5+ legit 2-way kind of guy.

Kidd will have a totally new coaching staff. Interesting. He and Frank Vogel are attached at the hip.

Happy for Shammgod, sad for us.  Friendliest smile in the league.

Martin shares an annoying habit with Powell. They don't look at the basket when they get the ball. The game is put the ball in the basket. At least pretend to be a threat to shoot the ball. The other team doesn't have to guard players like that. Like to see the Mavs move away from having non-scoring threats.

Good grief, such nonsense. We are Mavs fans. All you do is bash the Mavs and their players and coaches. You bash Kidd who in a short time as coach has Mavs in WCF and beyond 2x, and who NYK wanted badly as he's a very good coach and highly respected by players. Your ongoing pseudonym for AD is not his name (!) and is offensive to real Mavs fans, not cute or contributory to the board in any way, and it is not offered due to him being hurt or missing a game but only as some weird schtick. You have nothing of value being added here for Mavs fans. It's all crapping on Mavs.

I have had enough. You are doing your best to crap on this forum's fandom and you're in the wrong place. Go find a play place where you can habitually speak good not evil.

MODS - this jerk is getting old. Way old. And we were told such crap by him would be confined to the Luka trade thread, or we would be rid of him. I am beyond tired of his crap. All Mav bashing. Maybe I am the only one, but you have one vote to send him packing.

HJ would likely be 3rd string in Dallas and not in the top 10. And I prefer players 11-15 make way less money (hard cap world realities).

While I would be in favor of a DJJ player as you describe, he would need a role. So if you want HJ, then Max needs to be part of outgoing so there's a role for HJ. I personally would not, because I don't trust HJ injury or offense situations.
