Just In: Houston Rockets center Steven Adams has agreed to a three-year, $39 million contract extension to stay with the franchise, sources tell ESPN. After playing a key rotation and leadership role in the Rockets' playoff run, the new deal keeps a top center out of free agency.

Similar to what Gafford should expect?

I really didn't think Adams had anything left. Although, maybe by default, Houston threw him out there in a super big lineup and it really worked. He was really good for stretches. It will be interesting if teams look to go bigger moving forward.

Adams is only 31. Why does it feel like he should be 40? I think Gafford is the better player though. Probably best suited for bench roles. I would think Gafford would probably look for 3-4 million more. Although, maybe he takes the security by extending earlier to get 50 million guaranteed. He could certainly get more if he waited, but there is always a risk.

^ I agree
If Steven Adams gets 3/39, Daniel Gafford can command 4/64 at the very least. I'd probably guess 4/72.

18mil average is exceedingly steep for your center position that may or may not be able to play starter minutes in the playoffs.
Gafford is amazing at what he can do. But he can do like 2-3 things at an elite level. Very valuable things nonetheless, but still.
I think this new CBA is going to crackdown HARD on even modest overpays. that 2-3 mil difference per year is the difference between a team avoiding a 1st or 2nd apron.
4/64 feels right about the top end for me given that will be roughly what the MLE will be next summer. I wouldn't be shocked if it ends up being 4/55 or 3/45 or something like that.

He may be the slightly better player, but Adams is probably the best offensive rebounder in the game, and that's what Houston thrives on.
