@TheSteinLine
The Knicks have now formally requested permission to speak to Mavericks coach Jason Kidd and the request was denied by Dallas, league sources tell @TheSteinLine and @DLLS_Sports.

I’ve gathered that the Knicks’ pursuit might not stop with the official denial of permission.

Another thing to consider with Knicks-Mavs-Kidd: multiple reports say DAL officially denied permission. If somehow this turns into a mess and this isn’t the end, hard to see how the NBA doesn’t intervene with tampering stuff.

Even with the denial, the Knicks could still offer a trade package that Dallas decides it can’t refuse, I guess.
There’s just been no indication that Dallas wants Kidd to leave.

Given the Knicks have already went through backchannels and tampered with the Mavs already, this blatant disregard for the rules should hopefully result in a massive penalty.
At least a FRP should be docked by this given the history.

Given how the Knicks have now officially requested permission for Kidd, I figured to give it its own thread.
Especially since they seem like this denial isn't going to stop them.

The only way any of that happens is if Kidd wants to leave Dallas badly AND the Knicks are willing to give up a nice trade package. Both of those things would have to be true before the Knicks would be allowed to talk to Kidd.
So I think we can put this to bed.

Kidd could still talk to management to express a desire to leave which might soften the Mavs' stance.

From all the reporting we get, Kidd has invested in hiring specific assistants - the types of assistants who are assuming Kidd is the HC when they are hired. There is simply zero indication that any of the current coaches or the new hires (one of them in the last week) will be working for anyone other than Kidd.
Nothing is 100% certain. I get that. But the possibilty of Kidd moving now seems ridiculously small.

I agree the odds are slim to nil, but Kidd doesn't have full control of his future so I don't take the hiring of assistants as an indicator of much beyond that he might be coaching in Dallas and needs assistant coaches.

"However, Jay Triano agreed to terms on an assistant coaching job with the Mavericks on Tuesday after assurances from Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison that Kidd would remain the head coach. "

Nico Harrison's assurances don't seem all that credible to me... But ok.

My guess is that Kidd is going to be here next season, and that he's possibly just playing this in a way where he can generate better contract conditions or try to increase his power in the organization somehow? But, that's just a guess.
I do agree with the Giannis angle Dan suggested. He and Giannis have a great relationship, and I could see that being applicable to a few parties from a few angles.
But, the takeaway for me is that this seems (so far) to be yet another example of the Mavs handling their business in a bizarre and less than artful way. The outward facing aspect of this franchise has deteriorated since Cuban sold the team, and that is something I'm not sure I could've imagined a couple of years ago.

I dont see Kidd leaving this year. Its too close to the draft and Free Agency. I think his presence is tied to the Kyrie situation and possibly keeping Anthony Davis happy. Not to mention being a bad look starting off the Cooper Flagg era trying to find a new coach. Its not good timing.
But. What could the Knicks even offer us that would make this worth our while? Realistically.

I really wonder if there was any discussions "off the record" or did the Knicks just read social media and think, "man, these Mavericks are so unorganized, maybe there is a chance?"
If he is back, that is good imo. Although this is a big year for Kidd. Can you build a functional team around this current weird fitting team. Can he build a competant offense instead of relying on Luka to make the offense work.

I think there's a couple of ways to look at this:
1. They might have tried to work a trade behind the scenes but it didn't work out (which would explain why they let it linger so long)
2. They had no interest in a trade but aren't experienced/skilled enough to work the media behind the scenes (which would explain why they let it linger so long)

Very astute points
