So you can not say that, "the NBA did not step in and reject that deal". Or say that, "it was the ownership of NO who decided they did not want the trade and not the NBA", like as if it was a separate or different entity or group who owned them.
Stern nullified the trade because other team owners did not want it to happen and protested the trade to the league. The other owners thought that the Lakers would once again win multiple championships with a back-court of Kobe and CP3. Stern provided a reason/excuse of, “we thought it was in the best interests of the Hornets that CP3 stay in a Hornets uniform”. Yet 6 days later, CP3 got traded to the Clippers for what turned out to be a worse (?) haul. Goran Dragic was part of the package the Hornets were meant to receive from the Lakers and Houston. He was better than the players they received: Eric Gordon, Al Farouq Aminu, Chris Kaman and Austin Rivers.
Anyway, I agree with you, it’s naive to think that the league can nullify this Luka-AD trade, especially after what Nico and Dumont have been saying. Also, Nico should have definitely pushed to get Austin Reaves as part of the deal. I can't imagine anyone saying no, lol. That would have given the Mavs another play-maker and trade asset, and weakened the Lakers too.
Nothing you said conflicts with what I said -- the point being (and remaining) that the CP3 trade was stopped from being consummated by the ownership of NO. Stern was the governor (and no one else). It was in the same vein as if Dumont had stopped Nico's attempt to trade Luka. Every owner has that right.
But Silver did NOT have that right, in the Luka situation. That was my point, and despite what some wrongfully say, my point is factual (based on the legal docs that govern the relationships between multi-billion dollar owners, with each other, and with their mega-wealthy employees). There are strict limits that are well defined (through years of detailed negotiations using expert lawyers over and over). Rich people wouldn't have it any other way.

That’s why I referenced the overarching rule they used in the Sterling case and then later settled out of court. Not just us, but most fans and writers acknowledge this was an unprecedented deal. Trading a 25 year old generational star coming off a Finals run for a much older, lesser talented and injury prone player. The bigger thing is that Silver had to know how it would affect the entire fan base of the Mavs. This move was as good as a team saying they wanted to move in the middle of a night to another city. Surely Silver knew what this meant even if Rick Welts and Nico and Dumont allegedly didn’t.
Would Silver have been able to stop this trade? I don’t know. All I am saying is that IMO he would have tried much harder to block this if the recipient was not the Lakers or the Knicks, given the historic and unprecedented fallout this would have on an entire city and its fan base
I meant to identify the two extremes, not say that anybody here had taken either extreme position. Sorry it came across that way.
Pessimism doesn’t make you smart, just pessimistic.

Agree, Silver was not able to stop that trade.
It's a complete different situation than CP3... But he shouldn't have made that pathetic speech during the ASG, it was a clear sign that the league is behind this crap.

When I think of what if I tend to wonder who the mavs would have added if Luka was still here and how we could have added someone like a Danny Wolf and kept Luka and had a scoring PF alongside Lively and Gafford and maybe even added more depth with one or two Ivisic twins because we would also have a 2nd round pick. When I follow what those guys do in the rookie season it will be with that possibility in mind. You could even consider that Kyrie gets hurt and use Luka KLay PJ with LLivey next to Wolf and imagine that potential. Kyrie heals up in a year and Klay gets older and is off the bench with Naji Brandon Exum and Gafford. Solid team there and if one of the Ivisic twins provides anything on top of that you pair him next to Gafford off the bench. I think the future with Kyrie and Luka here is a lot better even if Kyrie is hurt because we have Exum and Brandon on the bench top replace both as backups in case of injury. Our injury luck cant be as bad as it was this year again. I would have kept Grimes as well and spent all of Dumonts money.

Wouldn’t it be cool if the Mavericks faced the Lakers in the Western Conference finals?

Not really. Lakers suck. I will never want them to win.

I want Luka and Dorian to win it all because they were great Mavs and because it's an extra middle finger to Nico and our hotdog water owners. They gave away what's almost impossible to obtain in the NBA, a superstar (and that's underselling Luka) with loyalty. Both of those guys wanted to be Mavs for their entire careers so I don't think anyone should have any qualms cheering them on.

I have to say after taking a 2 1/2 months break not only from the Mavs, but the NBA in general (haven´t watched a single minute, read the board) the play-off have me itching a bit. I can honest to god say that I won´t be a Mavs fan again, until they change full ownership. I was disappointed, when the Kings lost and happy, when I saw the 2nd quarter boxscore against Memphis.
With some time to reflect my final thoughts are:
Cuban was embarrassing himself for the final time with his in-arena behaviour and trying to wash his hands clean of hiring this idiot and selling the team to these owners, who have no clue about or passion for basketball.
All new owners make dumb decisions (see Clippers, Rockets, Suns and Kings), but at least you know they care about basketball and are willing to pay and learn. You have to understand that there is still a chance these new Mavs owners are not only clueless, but also incredibly cheap, because they don´t care.
Also don´t do it yourself regarding the draft. Nico will trade literally every pick for Durant. It only matters to Phoenix, whether the Mavs pick #1, #3 or #12.
Finally the more I look at these last years, it´s pretty obvious Jason Kidd is the true puppeteer in all of this. All the pre and post-Lindsey trades have the classic signs of a head coach making management decisions, which has proven to the worst concept in professional sports. He made all those calls on starting center McGee, targeting AD and trading Luka/Grimes. Nico is just an utter moron, so who do you think he consulted on how to improve the team? Of course his buddy, the head coach Jason Kidd, the PG genius.
I must say Lindsey deserves tremendous credit for his 12 months job as shadow GM, that brought some final(s) joy. Not for the modern GM moves he pulled off. That´s basically standard procedure for every successful GM. That he somehow navigated to get his will against the stupid ideas of Cuban/Kidd is impressive. He obviously knew, which buttons to push on that narcissistic simpleton Nico. Funny that both destructive dumbasses Trump and Nico are financed by Miriam Adelson, only one deports foreigners to LA, the other Americans to El Salvador.
Typing this out I realized, I´ll be cheering for Luka, DFS and Maxi to win the championship. Next year I´ll probably cheer for Hardy, Lively and PJ in Phoenix a bit.
Don´t get your hopes up Mavs fans. It´s over.

That's understandable. After "rooting" so long for an underdog, as the Mavs have typically been, it seems out of character to be a fan of a team with 17 NBA championships. Yet, the current configuration of the squad in LA has some intriguing personalities: 1. Luka, a Euro superstar who, like Dirk, wanted to spend his entire career in Dallas, loving the city and the fans, but who was unceremoniously traded in the middle of the night by a shoe salesman and the son-in-law of a billionairess and has been consistently bad-mouthed once out the door. 2. Doria Finney Smith, another former Mav with a close relationship with Luka, a player who, starting or coming off the bench, is simply a winner. 3. Austin Reeves, a self-deprecating country boy from Arkansas, who played college ball at Oklahoma. Austin doesn't look like a ballplayer until you watch him effortlessly weave his way down court to
finish at the rim. 4. Rui Hachimura, a player who, after achieving in Asia, played for Gonzaga. I'm still learning about Rui, but understand he has a Japanese mother and a West African father from Benin. 5. Lebron James. . .I don't know much about this player, but he seems to be an incredible teammate of Luka's. 6. J.J. Redick, a rookie coach who seems to have a good feel for the game.

It makes sense that Pelinka got long term security and an extension the same day the Mavs failed to make the playoffs. Perfect wrap up to this deal.

At least they are a well run organization which has rarely been the case for our Mavericks and we are now cemented as the worst organization in the league. The moves made by this team are enough for anyone to question their loyalty to a team. Further, your feelings about the Lakers have very little to do with the situation that Luka and Dorian find themselves in and the more success the Lakers have might actually help get rid of one of the Mavericks biggest issues.

Lakers still suck. All the glowing words written are lunacy. It's still the same sucktastic organization, just different bodies in their clothing. I will not be deceived.

I have never been a fan of the Lakers, but I am rooting for them to win it all. Not just for Luka and Dorian, but because its the best possible outcome for the Mavs. It is the best chance of getting rid of Nico before more damage is done. Unfortunately I think Dumont will need to go as well before this franchise has any chance of being relevant again.
