TRADE: Caleb Martin + 2030 2nd to Dallas | Grimes + PHI 2nd heads to 76ers

I'm still waiting for him to go Bart Simpson and cut the head off of Dirk's statue.

WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

Martin has been VERY good in the playoffs, on both ends of the floor. He's been a real disruptor on defense, an on-ball stopper on the perimeter, when the stakes get higher. I think that is the payoff the Mavs believe they will get. (And if that's indeed what they got, this will prove to be a really good get.)

Because that's what Philly wanted. For all the talk of how much better Grimes is than Martin (not so sure, myself, especially defensively), I suspect his role in this trade is to expire, not to be a 76er next year. The pick was what they gave up for Martin, imo. The Mavs wanted a player who they thought could help, and who they knew could fit into their salary structure moving forward. Morey's team is in the tank and he wants draft capital and is ALWAYS thinking of ways to find cap flexibility. He needs a cost controlled, helpful role player right now like he needs a hole in the head, knowing what we do about how he wheels and deals.

We should've known Grimes was gone the second he refused that extension, honestly.

As I said previously, I would have just kept Grimes and the second. I liked Grimes. Kidd obviously didn't feel that way with his lack of minutes in a lot of games.

I watched some of the Philly Martin highlights and he looked a little heavier, less explosrive this year. Plus, it appears he has been hurt or playing hurt for big portion of the year. Looking at his 23-24 stats, you can see what the Mavs envision. He is good sized and long. He is physical and plays with a little bit of a mean streak. His three point form looks a little off...almost a little hitch. But you can see the wings the Mavs are looking for. Guys who just do positive stuff who are not looking to be high scorers. In some ways, I feel like the Mavs are looking for guys like Aaron Wiggins that OKC has. Guys who will try to stay in front of dribblers and really contest shots. Will it work? I have no idea. Him being injured is concerning as well.

23-24 highlights with Heat. Hollinger's system had him at 17 million this offseason (his system is really weird and can be way off from actual numbers). At the time, it was considered a real nice signing by Philly.

I don’t disagree with any of that. I think Martin is a good player. But the trade itself was horrible. Grimes is arguably a better player than Martin 1 for 1. The Mavs gave up the best pick in the trade.

And for all the talk about Nico wanting to win now, he targeted a player who is going to be back in MAYBE a month. The mavs might not even make the playoffs to benefit from Martin’s disruption.

So this trade still makes zero sense to me. If it was Grimes for a healthy Martin+2030 2nd, then I can understand. But that inclusion of PHI’s pick, plus Martin being out till late March kills this deal all around.

Sixers guard Quentin Grimes on his reaction to being traded from the Mavs and how he can fit in with his new teammates:…… “[it is a] little bit shocking cause I thought I would be in Dallas for a little while.”

Well, fwiw, the league is learning that when the Mavs say "this is as high as we're going on your contract offer"...they mean it.

If only we could say the same for trades.

I still hate we gave up the Philly second. Second round picks are low probability gambles, but I just hate our team never takes many shots. Christie was a second round pick. So was Jalen. Maybe you can buy a pick, but I just hate how we never take swings on these picks. Or are aggressive with undrafted guys. You can put most of these second round picks on two way spots too.

Agreed, but at least we got another 2nd from Philly after they figured out Martin was still injured.
