Caleb Martin has been through the playoff wars and performed on the big stage. He has played in 45 playoff games and shot 40% from three.
Caleb Martin is signed for the next 3.5 season. Grimes is a free agent.
Caleb Martin brings toughness that Nico seems to value. See PJ Washington, Gaffford, Naji Marshall, Morris brother, pursuing Bobby Portis.
Okay I can accept all of that.
But why throw in a 2nd when Grimes is the more talented guy and the Mavs are eating more salary right now? We need a point guard now more than ever too.
Also Nico Harrison is a basketball terrorist.

The list of "who's expendable to be traded" is being modified as we go -- Christie made Grimes expendable, so Grimes could be traded for Martin, and Martin has now made _______ expendable. Martin is a SF.
I'm guessing Naji, and/or Klay, are possible trade chips we might see moved next. Their limit coming back would be a 24-25M player more or less if they package those guys together, as they will have to have some money to fill up empty roster slots. I would think Powell (4M) and perhaps Exum (3M) could be considered too.
Note: They will go over the tax line and use up most of their cushion under Apron 1 in this trade.
Don't think Christie can provide what Grimes did offensively and I don't think Martin makes anyone expendable. The fact that they killed most of their cap space in addition to sending a second in this trade makes it even more of a joke.
This is so crazy, we have been moving away from the old model of surrounding Luka with 3&D guys who can't do anything else, and now that Luka is gone we are going back to that?

We had an amazing roster with incredible talent 1 through 7 headed into this season.
In 3 days Nico literally turned the table upside down and nuked it. If he did nothing it would’ve been better than whatever he’s doing.

Do you know for sure that Nico is done?
I'm betting on another point guard, but also open to the possibility of Kyrie + Dinwiddie.

This is just insulting. The one nifty maneuver from the Luka trade was to get out of the tax. And they use that flexibility for this? They’ve immediately made the Luka trade look even worse. Throw in another pick. Downgrade your roster talent wise and age wise. Nico must really be a GM terriorist! Does anyone out there see what’s happening? What did Mavs fans do to deserve this plague? Fuck the Adelsons? I hope you lose all your money.

I just don't understand what even the plan is on offense at this point. I really don't.
I am going to need another playmaker by the deadline. Get me Coby White and I'm willing to give some leeway to the new look Mavs.

He can’t be done. The roster just doesn’t make sense. 3 starting level centers. 4 wings that overlap.
What is Hardy’s role on this team? We have no playmaker.
I think Nico is all in on a Lonzo buyout truthfully. That would help a little, but we still need more.

Oh my god. He’s going to trade Gafford for Marcus Smart isn’t he?

And it's hard to find someone with point guard skills who is big enough to play next to Kyrie

I think THE major component to this trade is the cost control. They decided Grimes is going to be paid more than they want on their payroll. Martin is locked in, at a far lower number, and they hope he can give them about what Grimes could.

He may gut the whole roster and then sign with Nike Friday.

Lonzo would be a great solution if he could shoot a lick. But he can't. So he isn't.
He can handle the ball, and defend. But that shooting element that's missing is a really big deal. And his health is questionable.
As a freebie (on a buyout), he probably won't hurt. But I think he's way more desirable from afar than if you have to watch him play every day.

This was a report on Caleb Martin just this morning heh. Nico operates in the shadows.
[Pompey] The Lakers, Kings, and Heat have all checked in on Caleb Martin's availability, sources tell The Enquirer. However, Martin would prefer to stay put, and the feeling is mutual.
Meanwhile, a source said the Lakers and Sacramento Kings are conducting due diligence on a potential trade for Caleb Martin. The source said the Miami Heat also contemplated reacquiring their former key role player, who’s making $8.5 million this season. He signed a four-year, $35 million contract with the Sixers on July 6 after spending the previous three seasons in Miami.
He would prefer to stay put, according to a league source. Another source said the feeling is mutual. The team is aware of the impact he could have during a playoff run.
One the Sixers beat reporters, Keith Pompey, has revealed that multiple teams have checked in on new Sixer Caleb Martin. however, neither Martin nor the Sixers want him to leave at the deadline. He still has three years after this season at $8 million per year, a steal.

Lonzo was a 39% 3pt shooter for 3 seasons before his injury. This year not so much.
I still think he’s shaking off the rust and obviously adjusting to playing on his reconstructed knee.
But I don’t think lack of shooting% will stop Nico from targeting him if he thinks he can be a good enough playmaker.
I am locked in on him not only because of the fit, but also the Kidd+Laker connection too.

There was no Lonzo-Kidd connection at the Lakers. Lonzo played in NO.

He has shown no hint he can replace what Grimes brought. He takes less shots than DJJ or Josh Greem. That rarely changes much. He is a guy that will stand in the corner and take one or two threes a game.

Yeah averaging 9.1 PPG getting 30 minutes doesn't help us at all offensively. I don't like this move, especially throwing in the pick.

I'm sure he is not done nuking this franchise, but this move made no sense. This guy is Thybulle level offensively but not that level on the defensive end. Grimes is the better player and yet we sent out a second and made making other moves more difficult for this trade. And this guy seems redundant with Max Christie.
