The defender they should pursue imo is DJJ, who offers more on offense than Thybulle and had a good fit in Mavs scheme, but even he may not be close enough to a 2-way solution.
I am looking for small upgrades. He would probably not be in the main rotation, but could be an investment for future. Tough to find a trade that works out. Thybulle hasn't been playing with an injury, and Portland fans seem to be pretty positive of him staying there.
I just think having a bucket getter (Hardy) or a good perimeter defender (Thybulle), I think the good perimeter defender is more important to this team.
I think DJJ idea is not going to happen. I actually think that decision DJJ, Clipppers, Mavs is one that worked out good for all parties. The story on that one is the Mavs were able to pivot quickly and recover. Old Mavs front office would have been left holding the bag.

Exactly my kind of thinking - you don’t need Thybulle for 35 minutes each and every game. But for example in a playoff series against the Thunder to make life difficult for SGA? He could be a real difference maker.

I think his fit on this Mavs team now is a but murkier than what it was 2 summers ago, but he'd still instantly become our best defender on this squad and that is a valuable trait.
His offensive game is certainly questionable, although I still think he's underrated. He is highly athletic like DJJ, knows how to cut, and was hovering around 40% on 3s last season on POR until mid January so there is some evidence that he can become at least an average 3pt shooter.
If Portland had a single vet PF that made sense, I'd be drumming up several hypothetical deals to get Thybulle on the Mavs along with said vet PF. Alas, I don't think it's meant to be as of now.
I think there is an interesting spectrum from Thybulle, to DJJ to Naji. They are all plus defenders with questionable 3 point shots, but each provides a tradeoff from defense to offense. I get the impression this FO would prefer a player than can provide value on both sides of the court like Naji than a defensive specialist like Thybulle. I see it as an either/or because for a deep team that already has a minutes crunch with the only hole being backup power forward, it does not make sense to add Thybulle's 11 mil without replacing an existing rotational player.

I would probably rather have Grimes play that role. He is obviously a drop off on the defensive end, but he more than makes up for it on the other end of the court (which we are going to need against an elite defense like OKC). I am very skeptical that Thybulle would make a big enough net difference to warrant the extra 11 mil in cap that we don't have available.

PREACH!
Plus in terms of measurables, Thybulle is super similar to DJJ. Both are 6’5. Both have 7’0 wingspans. Except Thybulle is an even better on ball defender vs. DJJ’s better ability to create his own shot.

Why is Thybulle even a discussion when we have Grimes? Thybulle couldn't see the court in the playoffs.

This is a very fair point. There aren’t many backup power forwards that would fit into the salary slot in a hypothetical Maxi+Hardy for Thybulle+ _____ trade and still makes sense.
That’s why I’ve pretty much dimmed my Thybulle chimney for now, as it just doesn’t make sense.
I will throw out, because I actually liked Dan’s suggestion of Olynyk; Maxi+ Gafford is a perfect salary match on paper for Thybulle+Olynyk.

There a few non-Mav players I love more than Thybulle so whenever I see his name brought up, I take it as my duty to make sure the next 2 pages of convo are devoted to him.

You are excelling at your effort, sir! Tari Eason is my Thybulle.
What do you think of either of the Champagnie twins? I was yelling for the SAS one when Detroit cut him a few years back.

Dallas Mavericks star Kyrie Irving has a bulging disc in his back and is expected to miss at least 1 to 2 weeks, sources tell me and @espn_macmahon. There is optimism that treatment over the coming days will provide a return to play target date.

Time to waive the White Flagg?
Definitely need to keep the pick now. Too many highly talented players in that draft. Bad back and bad calf.
If we find a way to get Nolan Traore, we´d have the Kyrie replacement sorted.

Ugh that sucks. Hopefully Marshall can settle down some ball handling. Tough to win when Spencer is your #1, followed by Jaden and two way guys. The offense really struggles when Luka and Kyrie are out.
I would also really like to see the defense pick up, but they have been pretty swiss cheese lately.

I see what you did there. Brilliant.
This season is turning bad really fast. This is a championship roster if healthy. Maybe a small trade for a Maxi replacement ( I want John Collins).
But now what do we do? Back problems are never good for older players. This could linger. The same with Luka's injury.
We are 2.5 games out of the play-in. If we have a bad month, would we consider selling at the deadline?

This team is cooked. I’d sell at the deadline whoever I could, but would aggressively shop Klay. He’s not right for this team. I’d also move Gaff and Maxi for sure. Really, everyone should be on the block, everyone. And, if you’re not turning the roster over, then this coaching staff has to go. They’re only good when everything is perfect.

No.
The first order of business is to fire the coach.
He had a good run, but the finals exposed him as much as the Mavs lineup -- he couldn't adjust.
Luka and Kyrie has been bailing him out.

Oh my God. We are so quick to quit, blame, trade and bring our favorite rant. Ok a few of us just did that.
I do like the Flagg comment if this season does turn all the way bad and I want to keep the draft capital either way. Need I remind everyone that last year looked really bad at times injury wise.
Just keep watching during this unfortunate time and time will let us see the results in good time.

I don't get upset with the losses. I hope they can tread water until we are healthy. It is not looking promising though.
This isn't fair but man I am having a hard time not being pissed at Luka. Again, not fair. We ask him to do so much. Last year was a grueling year and he deserved to get a way from the game. Although, in his first game here, I knew right away there was no way he was not going to get injured how he was moving. Now, maybe this all goes back to getting hurt in training camp. Luka keeps a lot secret, so maybe he was in fine shape before the injury. I just have a feeling he wasn't. Luka needs to take his fitness as a full year job...even if he takes breaks from basketball. His body type is not like a lot of NBA players. Also, his in season condition needs to be taken seriously.
Again, maybe I am just letting frustration get the best of me. Although, Luka is in his prime but I feel like we haven't seen peak Luka (shape and health) much the last few years. It is a tad concerning.

It could very well be that he is past his physical prime. He‘s playing professionally for over a decade, so it’s not like he doesn’t have experience and just started playing in a pro basketball setting.
