Has to. I don’t see any other way this works unless there is another salary saving move we’re not aware of.

His first year would start at $8.6m. Looks like there's now enough room for Klay to get the full $16.2m s&t with Green outgoing. Maybe they didn't feel DJJ was taking the same deal.

Yeah I have no clue dude. I'm reeling right now. Figured DJJ was as good as done.

The 3 year 27 mil aspect of it sticks out to me. That would start him at about 8.5mil.

Maybe DJJ didn't want to be paid that????

I'm confused.

Mavs used a significant chunk of their MLE to sign Naji Marshall, filling need for perimeter defender.

Derrick Jones Jr.’s decision to switch agents this week complicated hopes of re-signing him due to NBPA guideline of 15-day wait to change representation.

Mavs are pursuing sign-and-trade routes for Klay Thompson.

Naji Marshall coming in could mean Derrick Jones Jr. isn't returning, especially if the Dallas Mavericks sign Marshall with the mid-level exception.

There is a pathway that could fit all of Jones Jr., Marshall, and Klay Thompson, but it's slim and would require offloading both Josh Green and Maxi Kleber.

Darn. I really grew to love DjJ this year. Will need to read more on Marshall. dJJ developed a great chemistry with Luka and the dunks were awesome.

Dallas pivoted to signing Naji Marshall, league sources say, after unexpectedly conceding tonight that it likely would not have the wherewithal to retain Derrick Jones Jr. while the Mavs focus on the sign-and-trade pursuit of Klay Thompson. ESPN first reported Marshall deal.

Naji Marshall:

catch & shoot 3s: 63/158 (39.9%)

At rim: 78/136 (57.4)

DJJ:

Catch & shoot 3s: 105/295 (35.6%)

At rim: 200/322 (62%)

Gotta imagine Naji’s volume will increase next to Luka

We got an enforcer. He's not really a starting level player.

Maybe he didn't want to be paid that... to come off the bench for Klay. Maybe guaranteeing Klay the starting slot over DJJ was a necessary step to getting Klay, and DJJ said "Eff that."

No one seems willing to answer my question - how does Naji compare to DJJ offensively and defensively? Bueller?

Like his numbers. Hate losing DJJs athleticism.

Marshall is pretty much the opposite. True 3-D player vs. DJJ's rim pressure game style.

In terms of defense, I'd say DJJ is better, but Marshall has a reputation of being pretty damn good too. I haven't watched enough of Marshall at all to give you an honest answer.

My gut reaction right now reacting is one of dismay. DJJ fit.

Derrick Jones Jr. must be available, unless Dallas is getting Naji Marshall via a sign-and-trade. Otherwise, the Mavs will be using the Non-Taxpayer MLE to bring in Marshall.

So did DJJ know about that rule or did he just make a dumb mistake?

Looks like a similar type player but just do it differently. Still though, we saw Jones be close to an elite defender here and find ways to be productive on offense. Marshall will be TbD until we see it.
