Trade & FA 2024-25:
(06-28-2024, 12:40 PM)SleepingHero Wrote: @MikeAScotto
Sources: Indiana Pacers forward Jalen Smith is declining his $5.4 million player option and will enter unrestricted free agency, @hoopshype has learned. Smith shot a career-high 59.2 percent from the field and 42.4 percent from 3-point range for the Pacers last season.

I might be getting greedy here, but I wonder...if the DJJ contract is on the lower side of what we expect, does that allow the Mavs to use the BAE or even the remainder of the MLE on this guy? Could he be had for that? Would the Mavs even be interested?

If the answer to any of the above is yes, does that open the path to moving Kleber (along with Green) even wider?

Momentum is shifting toward D'Angelo Russell opting into his contract with the Lakers, per
@WindhorstESPN

“To be honest with you, I don't have a great feel for what this is going to be. I thought maybe a month or so ago, D'Angelo would opt out. Now, I think there's a chance, a stronger chance he will opt in, because the market isn't looking so great right now. We can talk about that later, but I'm now kind of leaning that direction.”

Don't do it, D'Angelo! You'll be an Atlanta Hawk about 15 minutes after you make it official!

BaE is lower than what he just rejected. I guess the only path would be a Maxi SnT, but one wonders if Indy is not just better signing him for same dollars than taking Maxi

Doh, sorry. I worked until like 4 AM last night and I'm going on very little sleep today. Typing faster than I'm thinking.

Thompson is said to be seeking a three-year deal at a minimum. The cap space teams are believed to prefer shorter contract structures than Thompson covets but can offset that with higher dollar amounts than teams like the Nuggets and Mavericks can muster. The Nuggets’ need for a two-way wing would be significant and obvious if Caldwell-Pope, as increasingly expected, does not return to the 2022-23 champions. Improving their outside shooting, meanwhile, is one of the Mavericks’ offseason priorities after they made the third trip in franchise history to the NBA Finals."

Klay @ min is a no-brainer.  He takes over 6th man role from THJ.
We could trade Powell for air (least favorable 2nd) and open up the full MLE and full BAE

well yeah
this conversation is about the possibility of us paying him around 20 mil a year or more for multiple years

He rejected to put his career fate in the hands of the franchise that just gave him a virtual DNP coach´s decision for the whole East play-offs. If he opts in the Pacers probably just trade him or he rides the bench again as Walker´s minutes increase.

I´m pretty positive Indiana would do a straight up S&T for Kleber.

Maybe with great negotiations with Smith and DJJ you can fit them both under the apron with just Powell +2nd rounder (if we still have any) and actually keep Kleber, too.

Sorry, misread the quote, thinking he'd take the minimum.

Me too but it meant minimum of 3 year deal, not at the minimum. Had to read it 3 times myself.

So, this is PROBABLY either leaked by Dallas to make someone else they're negotiating with (either a team in trade talks or maybe even DJJ's agent, for contract negotiation purposes) remember they have options, or by Thompson for similar purposes, but to his benefit.

I can't really be mad at any of this. The front office is on a roll.

I have a feeling that Orlando is the destination for Klay and that mentioning the Mavs is to make sure the offer is good from the Magic.

I also have a feeling that Grant is the piece that Dallas really wants. Too much smoke there from what has been passed around. I think Grant would be ideal to put this team over the top.

Nico is on a tear right now. I'll trust any move that guy makes at this point. He has definitely proven he knows what he is doing.
Find me at Lakersball.com. I'm done with the Nico and the Mavs.

Good news is if Mavs are willing to offload Green, they are serious players for SnT guys that would cost up to roughly 16 mil in their first season. Some teams might be willing to play along in the SnT as no salary would be going back.

Interesting names in that regard (in no particular order):
- Harris
- Trent Jr
- RoCo, Batum
- Patrick Williams
- Miles Bridges (don't kill me, just listing him)
- Jalen Smith
- Achiuwa
- Klay

and I trust he'll make no deal if the asking price is too high
running it back and seeing if we have any internal growth isn't a bad plan

Can't be said enough. Once DJJ is re-signed, the team is in the rarified airspace of "well, if that's all they can do, I still feel good about next season." I'm not sure how many times we've been able to say that before July in our collective history as fans.

And, there ARE still moves, both in addition to and maybe even instead of DJJ that could potentially turn this solid, intimate party into a project X style rager.

Yes this summer we won’t have to stay so incredibly patient and wait for them to make the late recovery move to somewhat save the summer. We are already a legit potential top 4 seed and quite possibly higher.

The later thread we will need is about self improvement of the players and strategy improvement from the team.

Careful with that last portion. Nico has still not made a trade without Lindsey's input... Wink

The Mavs have trade match via SNT to that number, but I doubt they have that much room under the Apron, after paying DJJ. .

(I don't have access to a spreadsheet right now to figure the rough working number for the combo of DJJ and a player via Green trade, but I'm guessing it would be around 26.5 off the top of my head, which allows a player making about 13.5 or maybe a bit more if Green is moved as well as THJ.)

Feels so much better.

If the old regime were still in charge I imagine this would have been the plan:
1. Trade THJ + 2025 first for cap space
2. Use said cap space to try and lure "big fish" (Paul George/LeBron/ or any other star older than 33)
3. Wait (with cap space) on big fish's decision / simultaneously be used by agents as leverage for their clients to sign elsewhere
4. Watch DJJ sign elsewhere (still waiting for big fish to sign)
5. Eventually use cap space to sign a #3 guy to a #1 contract

Much better place now.

Green and Kleber = 23.6mil for Cameron Johnson's 23.6mil.
