I feel like Kidd is settling into a matchup-based decision-making process with this. That's progress for you anti-Powell guys, right? I love Powell. He’s such a great leader. Sets the tone day to day with how hard he works. I think you’re right that it’ll be matchup based. I just want us to find some internal options so we don’t spend assets on a backup. I still like Maxi a lot. Many have been eyeballing Holmes for years and it would be nice if he was given more of a consistent chance to see if he can do it better than Powell

This is a worthy cause. I support this mission.

So this is probably premature, but I like to think long term. If Exum continues to play like this and he is clearly worth more than the MLE at the end of next season, is there any way we can retain him? I am assuming we will not have cap space. Is there any kind of extension we can do now or soon that could get a third year (bird rights) and be at all enticing to him?

"[Klay's] future has been in question... I'm told that the Warriors offered a deal, 2 years in the range of $48 million in an extension to Klay Thompson before the season, and now there's no deal."
- Shams Charania
There seems to be a lot of momentum of the Warriors letting Klay hit the trade market. They aren't going to trade him for nothing, but I'd give up THJ for Klay

I would, too, if Thompson was ready to come off of the bench and re-sign for THJ money. Is he ready to do either of those things, or is he going to do what seems likely to me and demand a starter's role and paycheck, ruining some other team? He's washed, obviously, at least to the extent that he'll never be a great defender and splash brother again. He's probably still better than THJ, so I get it...just rocky waters ahead on that path, imo.

Early Bird rights.
Lot more concerned about how to keep DJJ, tbqh.

When the Mavs were looking for a pick and roll partner for Luka, I was into it. That's not the mission anymore.
Yea, why are we talking about John Collins again? What did I miss?
We were desperate before. We aren’t anymore. Plus we found the lob threat for Luka in Lively. Collins and Lively would have the same offensive role. Collins is a turnstile on defense and doesn’t bring any toughness. Sure in a vacuum he’s a more talented player than Grant Williams but in terms of team building, I don’t see the fit.

Yeah I noticed he hugged every single player on the Mavs and even dapped up a bunch of fans on the way to the locker room.
The Mavs are not title contenders but I feel content with just letting things play out. I don’t see the need to make moves right now. See how the pieces fit. See whose stock rises and whose falls. See how competitive you are in the playoffs.

Depending on the cap increase, they can probably find a way to stay under the 1st apron and re-sign him with the MLE. Curry might have to be waived though.

Isn't early bird rights roughly equal to the MLE? The premise was that he was worth significantly more than that. I suppose early bird would prevent us from having to stay under the tax to fit him in MLE, but it sounds like we are in trouble if he is worth more than that.

I believe they have to stay under the tax line in order to use the full MLE, right? If they get to the 1st apron they would have to use the tax MLE which might not be enough.

While I'm sure these issues are a headache for Nico, they're a good problem to have. We got ourselves two good 'uns when we didn't have room to add players who would have been more expensive and wouldn't have ended up fitting as well as Exum and DJJ do.

We still have part of the MLE. Would it be prudent (or can it be done) to renegotiate his contract and give him more money for more years?

Is this about Exum?
I had a similar thought earlier. Since he's so obviously more than a minimum guy, at what point do the early bird rights set in? Do they have to wait until the END of NEXT season, or does having him on that 2nd year of the contract create a ramp up time to negotiate some type of extension earlier?

This was more about DJJ’s 1 year contract that might be hard to retain him in the offseason if he continues to play like he has. I don’t mind it for Exum too, but with EB rights there is a good way to resign him.

Ah, sorry.
Yeah, retaining DJJ might be a problem. I'm not sure it's in the cards, but I hope it is.

Also, I would really like to keep the full MLE to pick up Hartenstein in the offseason. He may not go that high, but he’s my favorite backup C moving forward. I’d also love to stick it to NYK and Leon Rose.

Would you rather Hartenstein or DJJ? I don't think we can extend a one year deal. I believe the only avenue to sign DJJ is exceptions, and if he keeps playing like this it will probably take the same MLE that Hartenstein would (which will take finagling to have).

I think you might be right. It might be either DJJ or something newer and shiny. And that's before getting into the future of the team from a luxury tax angle with the new owners.
All the more reason, imho, not to complicate the books with longterm money via trade right now. There's just so much in the unknown column.
