Trade & FA 2023-24: Stein-Ingram Trade Inevitable| LAL Want Lebron Back On Any Terms

Of course we have Dirk. But what else have we tried in the last 30+ years? Popeye Jones? Sean Rooks? Samaki Walker? Etan Thomas? Bernard James? The list is short and its bad.

Yeah, they have been terrible at a lot of things.    To add on to your point, the new front office made a point they want to surround Luka with length, but they have gone the other direction in their moves and have lost the length they had without replacing.   Even with their Two ways, they entered the season with a 27 year old shooting guard and a 6' point guard.   You would think they would look for length and keep rotating players out.   Did Dallas have anyone who fit this prototype on their G-league team (non two way?).   There was no curiosity looking  for players.   I liked what I see from Lawson but he is the type of player we need to get.

It is the exact thing that has been mentioned here for years. The Mavs are so far behind the curve when it comes to roster building trends.

How long have we had Luka? Thats how long we've known that you surround him with shooters. And you surround him with long athletic defenders.  Even better if they are long, athletic, and can shoot. We developed DFS for this role, but currently in the NBA you need 2 or 3 Dorians Finney Smith's.

Quote:"The market for Anunoby was hot at the trade deadline and should grow in the offseason, executives tell Heavy Sports. The Grizzlies, according to ESPN’s Zach Lowe, offered three first-round picks in a package for Anunoby, and it will take more than that to secure Anunoby this summer. Among the teams potentially looking to make a run at Anunoby: the Knicks, Warriors, Nets, Pistons and Pelicans."

Guess the Mavs can't feasibly join the Raptors firesale.

I can't remember if I brought this up before, but would you trade pick #10 (if kept) to Charlotte for Mark Williams if they won the lottery?   The unknown is typically always more exciting, so I wonder if you could get a small tip as well?   I think I asked before about Duren if Detroit won the lottery.

Hm. Three first rounders for a rental seems a lot. Also, protections on those picks are important. I really doubt OG would be worth three unprotected FRP. So if those were for example lottery protected FRP. A #10 or unprotected pick Mavs could offer is worth much more than a lottery protected pick

Personally, I would prefer a more proven center or I rather keep the pick and draft best player available.

They would have to throw in a minor asset to convince me. Williams was the 15th pick and his rookie season wasn´t as good as Duren´s. Hornets also own #28 and #39.
I think the real prize in Charlotte is Kai Jones. 19th pick in 2021. Not getting a lot of minutes but looking at the usual go to stats for defense (on/off, DFG%, blks+stls/36) he is among the best in the league.

Yeah the problem is always the same. Our assets are so limited that trading #10 for Mark Williams seems a reach. For a team like the Thunder it would be nothing. They just reach into their locker of 15 first round picks and find an appropriate package. For us it would probably be best to keep the pick, draft and develop the (projected/evaluated) BPA. Projecting young players is the only way out of this mess. People simply need to understand that players like Anunoby that are young, proven, on a good contract, are prime assets that can attract a lot of bidders that are in a better spot than us. We can only secure distressed assets in trades that nobody else is willing to (over)pay for.

We cannot outbid teams for proven players, but that´s all that Cuban wants. This is basically the last off-season they can change their approach. If they go for more Kyrie, THJ, Bullock, McGee types, Luka is out in 12 months. Guaranteed. You can´t go old in a league that is trending young AND overpay for it,too.

This is a good thing. I think the worst thing we could do is give up several assets for a single player.

Even lower down the pecking order guys like Draymond, Grant, Turner etc I don’t think it makes sense if we have to give up Green/Hardy AND FRP’s.

The whole build around 3 all stars with no assets so you just have vet min guys i believe the league is going away from that and more towards depth and youth

Luka + Kyrie is enough star power. We need several defenders, not just one

Any ideas for who we should target for MLE? McDaniels seems like best case scenario. Jaxson Hayes is a guy to look at. That type of player, a guy who was behind others on the depth chart who could blossom into something real.

We can’t miss this year on the MLE. They must be a 3-4-5 rotation player

It's about impossible you can get that caliber of player for big MLE contract price (11.5M more or less), much less for the TxpMLE of about 7M.

Consider - we're talking about 3-4-5 player for that exemption, when last season what it bought them was an almost-unplayable backup center.

Sad to say, the Mavs already have been paying more than that number for quite a few players who are NOT a 3-4-5 rotation player (Wood, Bertans, Hardaway are more than that MLE level, and last season both Powell and RB were paid in that general vicinity), which again underscores the horrendous roster-building and payroll management we have had by Cuban as GM.

I like Keita Bates Diop or Torrey Craig as a backup forward, especially if they lose Bullock. Drew Eubanks would be a decent backup center. If Hardy and/or THJ are moved then Jevon Carter could be an option. Solid defender and could play with Luka or Kyrie.

I misspoke with how that was worded. I meant “position” 3, 4, or 5….. not “player ranked” 3-4-5 on the roster.

I don’t consider it that big of a deal who the 3rd best player is. Luka-Kyrie is probably the best offensive duo in the league and i think the way to win with those guys is finding several role players that fit, NOT just getting a good starter or two

The role players just don’t fit. None of them can play defense or rebound. None have size. This was a huge miscalculation by the idiots pressing the buttons. We could field a team of g-leaguers with Luka and Kyrie and still have a top 10 offense

Defense is at a premium currently. It all makes the Wood trade a real head scratcher. Do they even watch basketball?

Scenario: I got on tankathon to get a draft order for when the Mavs get the #1 pick. It went: Dal-SA-Por-Det-Hou-Cha-Orl-Ind-Was-Uta-Orl-OKC-Tor-NO. My mind has me thinking about getting out of the horrible mess we’re in asset-wise. This 1 turn of events, if handled properly could very easily turn our fortunes in that sense.

Three team trade:

Det gets #1 and Bullock

Orl gets #4, Bertans and Duren

Dal gets #7, Stewart and future FRP from Det, WCJ and a future FRP from Orl

Dallas then trades #7 for #21 and 22 and a swap of Oneal and DFS for THJ and McGee. We also get our pick back.

Then trade #21 and 22 for Toppin and our pick back

Kyrie/Green/Luka/Toppin/WCJ
Hardy/ONeal/DFS/Stewart

All our picks back +1 from Det and 1 from Orl. So 6 future picks in total that can be traded if needs be.

Aaaaand we’re back! Depth, youth, vets, leadership, picks.

You really don´t like Wenbanyama. Or is it about injury concerns?

Injury, and we have a generational talent already, and our asset chest is almost fully bare as we keep talking about day in and day out.

Add Wemby to our team this last year and we might make the playoffs, if he stays away from season ending injury. We still have few assets to improve from there. Add the team with the assets I created and we’re making the playoffs while having tons of assets. Better yet, see if you can do better in a trade down scenario. I’m already looking at a Wemby, THJ, Bertans and McGee for Claxton, Bridges, ONeal and our pick back scenario, maybe the 21 too so we can pick up Lively.

Personally I have Wemby´s trade value in the Luka, Giannis, Jokic range. And I think the mentioned package is still short of even considering it.

So we could get more than that? Even more reason to sell high!
