Should have taken a screenshot. 5 replies 2 views. This finally breaks up a very dead part of the offseason

Danny Ainge strikes again. He's getting draft capital just like he did in Boston.  When are people going to learn not to trade with this guy.  Big Grin

I like both sides of this.  I’ll point out that while LM wasn’t a great fit as a free agent signing, the signing proved valuable to this deal.  I wonder if Cleveland would rather have Hardaway secured for three more years or the risk they have with expiring LaVert.

Utah made out well too.  They have 17 guaranteed contracts now I believe and are a hair over the LT.  So, maybe more to come there.  I also think Utah may have too many good players to fully tank.  It is an interesting blend of guys who are probably still around once the rebuild is accomplished like Vanderbilt and Agbaji and some grizzled veterans who should be elsewhere sooner rather than later.

Now is when the clock starts for the Mavs to go make a trade.  Almost every available Utah piece would make sense currently.

Crazy. I didn't see this coming at all. We knew Mitchell was getting moved with 100% certainty the second Gobert got traded, but Cleveland??

Utah is $6mm under the hard-cap and can't go over.  So, that limits what they do from here because of the S&T (though they weren't likely to be taxpayers anyway).  If there is to be a Westbrook deal, it might be a 3 for 1.

A year ago I wanted Conley (the player) more that THJ (the player).  Today, I want Conley (the contract and position) more than THJ (the contract and position).

NY still owns our 2023 BTW.

What's the most accessible path to Conley from here?

I’m thinking THJ and either Frank, Green or 2 seconds would be the right way to go? If they are really in to tank, Bertans is the shorter contract. Bertans, Frank and a second? However, Ainge is on a rampage right now. Not sure it’s a good idea to trade with him even more now.

I would think it'd be a Powell package since it gives them cap relief but it's tough to get to a number you need to match without Hardaway.  I like Powell + Green for Conley because I think we'll need Frank to fill that third wing role but then you're still 4M short.  Maybe there's a way to expand it where we also get Beasley or Bogdan back to fill the need for a third wing?

I will be very surprised if Dallas explores any trade that includes a future first.   I think they hold tight, hope the picked owned by the Knicks is conveyed, and then start exploring a multiple first trade over the next 18 months.

So far now, I think we are left with either a veteran min signing, or using Dwight in a trade for a similar player on similar deal.  The focus will be internal development over the next year.

edit- Maxi could be a sneaky guy to be moved, but I still think he has more value here than he would via trade.

Powell/Hardaway/Green/2 seconds for Conley/Beasley maybe?  Personally I'd do that in a heartbeat, addresses both our needs.

I think just getting a salary match...I don't think Utah would want assets back.   Just maybe guys on expirings.   He has two years left on a contract with high #'s.   I will be surprised if Dallas is interested
