Mavs GOAT: The Legendary DIRK
(01-05-2022, 11:34 PM)KillerLeft Wrote: Great ceremony. I could’ve done without about 4 of the different arrangements of that stupid Green Day song, but everything else was perfect.

Dirk also deliberately listened to this song in the car on the way to his last game (it says so in the book "The Great Notwitzki"), so this song has to have a huge meaning for him. Prior to the game came Mr. Jones by Counting Crows, which Dirk named his favorite song some 15 years ago which could also have been coincidence haha.

I thought the ceremony was great, I cried like a little baby. If I had known you were there we could have met up for a beer before Smile

Sorry Dirk, that song is so ingrained to me with Seinfeld that I can't not see Kramer, George, Elaine, and Jerry when hearing that song.

There will never be another player I will ever see play and get as much enjoyment as watching Dirk play.

If Silver was smart, he should bring back the old timers game and have Dirk, Duncan, Garnett, Allen, play for a quarter or two.....  because you know they would have more fun with that game than anything that goes in the sh*tty all star game they play nowadays.

The Athletic is doing a top 75 ranking.   Dirk came in at 21.  Steve Nash at 38.  Jason Kidd at 36.   Charles Barkley at 22.

I am surprised Kevin Garnett has not been ranked yet so he is above Dirk.  That sounds pretty crazy.   KP is a great player, but he only one his title with 2-3 other great players.   I was expecting Karl Malone was going to be ranked over Dirk, but a strong case can be made that Dirk was the better player.   David Robinson also not ranked yet.

I will die on the hill that Dirk was better than Garnett and its not even close. Unfortunate the writers doing the ranking don't see it that way.

Silly writers. How about this for being old? We're probably getting into or approaching an era where many writers didn't even see most of Dirk's career.
Not very astute ^^^^

After unsuccessfully trying to find it on my own I'm now taking a chance on swarm intelligence:

I'm looking for a video of an Nash-assisted Dirk Alley-Oop, but can only find the Curry-assisted one in the ASG. Yet I'm pretty sure the two connected on one, as I still remember such thing from a show I was watching growing up in Germany called "Inside NBA".

Does anyone at least remember this one too or heck, even has a link to that footage?

Nowitzki pays a painful price
Dirk Nowitzki once made his big breakthrough in the NBA and became a legend there. The Würzburg native ended his career only at the age of 40 - with consequences for his health.
In his adopted country of the USA, Dirk Nowitzki is one of the biggest legends in the sport. He is to be honored once again at the game between the Dallas Mavericks and the Golden State Warriors.

It was an emotional evening for Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks on this April 10, 2019.

The "German wunderkind" ended his long career after more than 1,500 games and over 31,000 points in the NBA and said goodbye to retirement.

As a 20-year-old, the Würzburg native had once been traded to the Mavs and from then on played basketball at the highest level. A long career that left traces due to the high load - and took a toll on his body at the end of his career, as Nowitzki now admitted.

"I can't move much anymore," the NBA legend revealed in the weekly podcast Einfach mal Luppen mit Felix und Toni Kroos, questioning the timing of his career's end. (NEWS: All the latest info on the NBA)
Nowitzki struggles with timing of his career end in the NBA

"I sometimes already think about whether the last two years were really worth it. Sure, I still set a few nice highlights, but in the end, we were not good athletically. I couldn't really move anymore."

In particular, his damaged left ankle, which ultimately also led to the end of his career, was a constant problem for Nowitzki. Numerous operations did little to change that, and the 43-year-old is still struggling with the consequences of his long career.

Whether an earlier departure would have made a difference is hard to say, but the former national player still occasionally wavers about his decision to remain loyal to professional sports until 2019. (DATA: NBA results and schedule)

"Maybe my foot would be a little better and I could move a little better. I think about that sometimes in the evening," Nowitzki said.
Nowitzki was mentally fit at Dallas Mavericks until the end

Meanwhile, the fact that things went so well at all for so long was largely due to the good mental state of Nowitzki, who crowned himself NBA champion with the Dallas Mavericks in 2011.

"You're still having fun to some extent, the body is going like this, but the motivation and the head are still there," the longtime Mavs captain explained with regard to the late phase of his career, emphasizing the difficulty of finding the right time to retire under these circumstances.

In the end, a career full of highlights and accolades stood for Dirk Nowitzki, whose career served as a role model for an entire basketball generation. (DATA: All tables of the NBA)

And a career that is now coming to an end on the tennis court, which the thoroughbred athlete still enjoys.

He really gave his all for the Mavs but I don´t think one or two seasons more/less would have made a difference when it comes to his ankle. Just sad to see him like this.

I assume he just now realized that life is bigger than basketball.

He probably understands now that he was a fool to prioritize basketball over everything else back then, and may be has to deal with a sore body now because of it.

But tbh - wouldn't most of us have the same trouble to stop doing what you do bet because it's "reasonable"?
Test. This is a test.

ESPN ranks Dirk at 17 in their all-time 75. Ahead of KG, Barkley, Malone, AND Robinson as he should be.

Not sure KD deserves to be placed so high. IMO he should be behind Dirk too. That would make Dirk the #1 PF ever. Also, not sure Olajuwon should be in that group. I think he is in the Robertson/Bird/Duncan range (not a huge step up, but if you take them in groups like that). IMO he is for sure ahead of Kobe and Shaq…and esp KD!

Some foot/ankle specialist in Dallas needs to devote all their time into fixing Dirk's pain.
