Thanks for finding this!
I was REALLY curious how he compared. He doesn't look like he is in "superstar shape", but he looks 100% better than last year. That is GREAT news.

I hate being so annoyed by this stuff but holy smokes, the front office has performed so poorly for such a long time it’s still really hard for me to grasp.
I also have lost pretty much all the optimism about Nico as well. He pulled off a picture perfect Donnie Nelson type of offseason. Slept through the draft, no improvement in the asset department, underwhelming FA signings.
I am putting all my eggs into the „Nico didn’t have enough time to pull something off“ basket but it is tough to have any type of faith here.
Well see. At least Powell looked better towards the end of last season.
Btw a pretty smart twitter guy called Powell starting a few months ago:

Powell started next to KP six times in 20/21.
From game to game last season, there were obviously many injury (and sickness) issues that wreaked havoc with the lineups. They were often shorthanded, and had to adjust accordingly.
But my point was that teams with essentially the same players tend to pick up where they left off -- which they have done. The apparent starters at season's end were DP (as the inside big) and KP (as the outside big), and with the same crew back, yep that's where we begin again. If you are somehow surprised at that, so be it. I was not.
Going forward? Who knows. They start where they are. And if your point is that there may be change or injury again this season, I definitely agree with that. (My bias? I'd love to see WCS elevate his game and win the job as the starter alongside KP.)

Smart analysis.

Running it back with Maxi would have me thinking the same...
Luckily Kidd read my texts and I convinced him to start Diamond Powell instead...

That´s against the Würzburg accords. One guy from Würzburg shall be in the lineup in any given game.

He slept through a draft in which we had no picks? Odds are they didn't find a prospect they liked enough to pay the price for. To be honest outside of the top 10 there weren't many can't miss prospects that'd be worth the asset investment.
Did you want him to trade away Brunson, DFS, or Maxi to get a pick? Cause I'm not too sure any rookie they would've gotten would be better than them this year. Can't fault Nico for that.

I don't think making a move just to make it look good on headlines is a smart way to build a team. There's something to be said about incremental improvements. I agree the Mavs DO need to get better, but perhaps we're closer to a championship core than we think.

I would insert Bullock, but it’s crazy that anyone can think Dwight is better than Maxi. Dwight will fail in the starting lineup after a few weeks, I’m just concerned about how many wins it will cost us.

I wonder if Powell being designated as a starter already is a sell job to the Toronto fans
They will be acquiring a "starting" center for a backup that doesn't want to be there

With all the supposed focus on defense, it does not seem to be reflected in the starting lineup choice. That lineup was below average two years ago when KP was playing his best defense.

This has to be it... Why else would you announce the starters on day 2 of preseason practice. Well, if not - at least it makes me feel better.

Apples/oranges.
It's Dwight vs WCS, Boban, and Brown as the "inside big guy." The Mavs have chosen to amass a more than full supply of inside big guys who really can't fill any other role, and will undoubtedly use one to fill that job.

I suspect what was given was less of an "announcement" and more of an impromptu answer to someone with a specific question as to what the starting lineup looks like as they begin camp.
But I would love for there to be a TOR trade angle in the mix driving this. Please oh please!

Does this increase Brown's chances of sticking with the Mavs after final cuts?
Hate to lose a guy who somebody of Chandler's quality thinks worth developing.

Yep, caught me totally by surprise (well, except for starting a thread five weeks ago predicting this exact outcome).
My point? My point is the basis for you telling us we should have all seen this coming (like you did) is flimsy. "Where they left off" was three regular season games. The reason they tried it at all was because they finally gave up on Richardson. And, it wasn't actually "where they left off" since we played seven games after that with Maxi starting four, Boban starting three and Powell/Willie starting zero.
