Just watched highlights of their dual on NY and CHI and both kept shooting over double teams, and over dribbling.

Josh Green is a top 5 Mavs player...

Is it better to be a thread starter, or a thread Finnisher?

The eye test says he is bad at defense. The fact that he got benched in Chicago for defensive limitations suggests he is bad at defense. The evidence seems overwhelming. He can't protect the rim, and he can't guard the perimeter particularly well. For a team that is already struggling with defense, has plenty of shooting, needs playmaking, and probably already has too much cap devoted to the big rotation, he does not make a lot of sense. The only reason to do this is if we can turn him into an asset, but I skeptical given suggested assets and cost.

Just the first time the Mavs are seemingly listening unlike with Randle, Turner or Olynyk, when they´d rather chase Wright and re-sign Powell. Literally a new foreign concept Nico might have introduced to Cuban. It´s easier to sign FAs that actually want to be in Dallas. Markkanen, Dragic + one of Diallo or Hart would be an awesome off-season.

Outside of Luka/DFS, the rest of the team shot 15/74 from three (20%) over the last four play-off games against the Clippers. You better be hell a great at defense, if you want to win a seven game series with the 3rd to 10th best player shooting 20% from three. We need more offensive talent, too. As we have seen with the Knicks a headcoach can make a hell of a difference for the team defense, but as the Knicks also learned in the play-offs, offensive talent matters most, and they did not have enough of it, so they added Walker/Fournier.

I have my doubts about both Dragic and Markkanen but they certainly fill our positions of need. They might not be perfect, but still better than nothing. I will assume Dragic will not get bought out and Markkanen wants 15 per (so doesn't fit in TPE). The one thing that would be off limits for me would be the FRP, but I wouldn't mind paying SRP and Green, as it doesn't look he will be able to get minutes anyway.
I think it is easier to do it as two separate trades. I would like to keep Maxi but Powell and Reddick SnT can be movable contracts. TE could also be used. Example 1: trade 1: Powell+Burke+Terry+2 SRP for Dragic trade 2: Chi - Green and SRP, OKC: Reddick Snt and 2 SRP, Dal: Markkanen Example 2 - use TE: trade 1: Reddick+2SRP for Dragic trade 2: Dal: Lamb in TE, SRP, Ind: 0 trade 3: Dal: Markkanen, OKC: Lamb, 2 SRP, Chi: Green, SRP

Those hurdles essentially make a deal for Lauri nonexistent. CHI is overplaying their hand. Essentially they're forcing Markkanen to return on his 1 year QO deal, but in doing so they won't be able to trade him next year without his permission (and any team trading for him wouldn't get his bird rights). Markkanen will undoubtedly leave the following year in FA and I'm sure he won't be a nice guy in the locker room either. Bulls are delusional if they want to make a deal surrounding Lauri. Reading that Fisher piece I'm walking away with the idea that they actually might not want to make any deal.

CHI D w/ LM: 107.3 CHI D w/o LM: 108.4 Net: +1.1 2018-2019... CHI D w/ LM: 112.3 CHI D w/o LM: 111.6 Net: -0.7 2017-2018... CHI D w/ LM: 110.5 CHI D w/o LM: 108.4 Net: -2.1 So his rookie season was his worst, where CHI's D was significantly better when he sat. CHI was not much better when he sat his second year. And the last two years the CHI D has actually been better when LM played. And these are solid defensive teams the last two years with CHI ranking 9th and 12th in the league defensively. And when you look at RAPTOR-D and LEBRON-D advanced stats you see LM as a middle of the pack NBA defender as well. Hence, I think I can say he is "solid" as an NBA team defender.

From what I get when I see Lauri playing defense is he is he lacks the lateral quickness, but KP isn't any better than Lauri on the perimeter. I would even give Lauri the edge over KP with regards to defending guards and small forwards.
We all know KP's biggest strength is in rim protection, even the most recent version of KP is a better rim protector than Lauri. But it's not really about KP's superior length that makes him better than LM. Lauri just doesn't even try. Maybe that can be fixed with a new team, specially if that team has Dirk on it.

RE: Markkanen's D
To be clear... I am NOT suggesting he is a great defender. All I am suggesting is that in a four year sample size (which is quite big), he has NOT destroyed his team's D with his presence on the court and has helped his team at least "hold serve." This is pretty significant IMO. (08-10-2021, 10:49 AM)Mavs2021 Wrote: Outside of Luka/DFS, the rest of the team shot 15/74 from three (20%) over the last four play-off games against the Clippers. Lets plan our long term asset moves on a 4 game sample. And ignore they shot over 50% from 3 the first three games, or that they were playing freaking Boban in a zone in the last three games daring the best three point shooting team in the league to fire. Take a look at the offensive and defensive rating during that series and tell me it was the offense that was the problem. We just replaced JRich with Bullock in the starting lineup. That should make a big difference in the shooting department And if you are expecting Kidd to turn this group of players into an elite defense, prepare to be very disappointed.
