The charges he takes, the steals he gets and his hustle/effort on defense is what sticks out most to me. I hate the contract still but I'll take a dip in shooting splits if the defense is passable. He's always been streaky offensively anyhow.

He's a "shooting" guard, but he's just not good enough as a shooter. Unfortunately, I think we notice the games where he is doing okay, and our minds figure he's probably doing pretty good, when in reality the numbers say something very different. Starting has NOT fixed his broken shot!
He's become better on defense, to be sure, and apparently is a leader with a good attitude.
But the one thing you want from him the most - the ability to knock down shots, especially 3s, to open the floor for Luka - is something he still is fairly lousy at. The season overall - 38% overall, 36% on 3s. Most recent 10 games, all starting, with much against some crappy opposition - 42% overall, 33% on 3s. And he has the benefit of Luka feeding him open looks, so it's not likely to get better.
For that reason, in any trade where there's a decent player coming back, I'd gladly include THJ in the package. In fact, maybe I should say "eagerly." I don't think he's a solution to build around, but I do think he has enough value resuscitated where, given his declining-dollar contract, moving him is at least value-neutral and might even be seen as value to a team needing a SG.
I agree with the sentiment that Hardaway's defense has been pretty above average this year but you can't ignore all the above in your post. When the entire planet is screaming "get Luka help" it's essentially a euphemism for "replace the starter who is shooting less than 40% overall while shooting 12 times a game". He's a fine basketball player but he's just not good enough for the role that he's in.

If he didnt think of himself as equal to or greater than S. Curry shooting wise....he might be ok. But he lets you down game after game after game with bad shots that kill possessions...especially when there was a better bball play to be made.
Its deplorable.

Who, Christian Wood?
Because he's the topic of this thread.
If you're talking about Hardaway, I wish you'd stick to the hate thread you started about him where you've already written all of these same posts 12 times already. Nobody will bother you in there. You can complain until you've had your fill.

Good plan, because, as we know, all of the people who are choosing to play him read this forum religiously.

Not sure how THJ got into this thread, but he’s mostly terrible. 2-11 last night with Luka drawing massive attention is actually a fairly common game for him. Inexplicably. He really should be better. He used to be better. Sometimes he gets hot but not that often. He seems like a good person who I like and wish he could regain his form. But the Mavs would be better off if they didn’t have to pay THJ his pretty sizable contract and could have spent that money to retain Brunson or Wood (see, I connected it).

Not sure what people expect.
He has been a lot better since they inserted him into the starting lineup. Made 5+ 3s in 8/20 games. Averages 16/4. Shooting 39.7% from 3. 57.6% TS.
Leading the team in on/off for the season at +11.3. Offense is 9.2pts better. Defense is 2.1 better with him on the floor.
Basically the player that he used to be with slightly improved defense.
Not to even mention that despite all his flaws he has been one of the few players that have shown consistent effort. He ranks 6th in the league in drawn charges. Mavs as a team combine for 21. 10 of them coming from THJ.

That's the human dynamic, ego, at work.

Agree. I also think, as shown again yesterday and even in a couple of halfs against the bottomfeeders, it is the offense that is really the Mavs problem, not defense. Same as against Houston, Mavs just couldn't score against Boston, especially in the first half. Of course Celtics are not some rookie team not able to comfortably close a game with a big lead at halftime. THJ makes offense better (on average). Of course there are games like yesterday, but there are also a lot of decent/good games, as you have pointed out. Opposing teams have to stay closer to THJ than they need to guys like DFS, Maxi or Bullock. Green is also not there yet, imho

THJ has been better for a limited number of games in the starting lineup, so much so that I’ve laid off him in that other thread. (The Mavs still would be better off without his contract, and he’s prone to a lot of variation in his play.) Hopefully, last night was just a bad flashback. It’s not like anyone else except Hardy and Powell were any good.

One thing that I actually love about this board is the fact that there's less activity which I think actually adds more substance. As opposed to a place like reddit where you start to see sooooooooo many bad takes. This board disagrees but at least it's nuanced and informed and I also think it's nice that there's so few folks that you understand how certain people lean.
Not necessarily related to everything happening in this thread, just a random thought I had reading this.
