Why We Should Trade for Buddy; Or How I stopped worrying about fit and Love the 3bomb
#1

I know what you're thinking, "is he really bringing up this dead horse again to beat it for a hundredth time?" Yes. Yes I am.

I understand we have limited assets and should be watching how we use them carefully. I understand that Buddy Hield is not a perfect fit, has attitude issues, and is overpaid. And yet I'm asking to put all that aside and see what he does bring to this team that would radically transform this team.

His unreal 3pt shooting.

Buddy isn't just your run-of-the-mill elite marksman. No. In fact the only shooter that has kept pace with Buddy since he's entered the league is Steph Curry. Only Steph exceeds Buddy in terms of volume and efficiency these last 4 years* (Duncan Robinson is almost there but just falls short in terms of volume, same with Seth).

One of the biggest blunders this team ever did was trading away Seth, who has been the most efficient 3pt shooter the last 4 years (44.7%) in the league for Josh Richardson. It was clear when Seth was on the court, teams had to guard him, giving Doncic room to operate. Buddy would not only bring back that kind of pressure, but also do so on even more volume, something we all opined Seth to do while he was here.

Some stats on Buddy:
Buddy has made more 3's in the last 3 years than Seth Curry has made in his entire career (843 to 585).
-Buddy's worst year as a pro (his rookie year) saw him average 39% from 3, and made 148 threes total. Good for 29th in the league. Seth Curry best year as a pro saw him make 145 threes
- Buddy has 1167 made 3's in his career. He's made the most 3's in the shortest amount of time in NBA history. He beat Steph Curry by 8 games.
- THJ has 944 made threes in his entire 7 year career, Buddy eclipsed that in less than 4 years.

Buddy's level of shooting is literally only matched by Steph Curry. He's arguably a better shooter than Klay Thompson, Ray Allen, and Reggie Miller. His only issue is that is probably his only elite skill. He isn't a great defender. He's not a ball handler. He's not a play maker. But man, can he shoot it.

Why I'm so keen on acquiring Buddy is seeing how modern offenses run by successful franchises. The Warriors and the Heat made the finals the last 6 years using this method. Take a look at this video and watch from 50 seconds onward if you want to skip ahead. Miami and the Warriors use cross screen actions to create easy cuts and open looks, forcing the defenses to choose between stopping a 3 or a layup. If you have deadly shooters like Duncan Robinson, Klay Thompson, and Steph Curry,  this makes it nearly impossible. We can try and recreate that here with THJ+Buddy+Bullock. That kind of shooting would form one of the most formidable trios in the league.

Second reason, Cost: Buddy is at an all time low from a cost prospective. The Kings were ready to trade him for a package involving Kuzma+Harrell and a protected 1st. The Mavs could easily match that from a talent perspective with whats on the roster currently. I can see the Kings being enticed by Kleber especially if it means replacing Bagley with him as the Mavs could absorb Bagley with a TPE.

All I am saying is Buddy is the truth. We need some more talent. He's a perfect buy low candidate and would fit remarkably well next to Luka.
