The Pels are looking at Kira Lewis as their point guard of the future. Not giving him more playing time was part of the reason for letting SVG go. Right now they are looking at a veteran pg to run things and keep Zion happy until Kira is ready. Of course they can outwait everyone and match so as to not come away empty handed as a final option.
I wouldn't mind Ball here at all.

Last I checked, $10.8mm is greater than $9.5mm. LAL gets a TPE.
Personally, I'd rather get Caruso for $10mm than Lowry for $25mm+. Obviously depends on what you do with the other $15mm.
Yea, I really like Caruso as a DFS type role player as long as he's not the primary get this offseason.

You might not mean what I think you mean, and I don't know a ton about Caruso, but...
Is Caruso anything at all like DFS? I'm thinking they have very different skill sets.

If the rumors (and actions of the past three seasons) are true, it seems they DO think a guard-sized guy is needed here. I don't think everyone here would agree, but I can see where they're coming from. Quickness has not been among the Mavs' strong suits, recently.
Thing is that size doesn´t really impact perimeter defense in a negative way as long as quickness isn´t a problem. Simmons defended Young and Doncic better than any other player in the league. DFS matchup numbers against PG/SGs are better than his numbers against SF/PFs.
I think the important part is that wing sized defenders simply cost more. Same for the offense. They want another guy that can create of the dribble. A big playermaker has a bigger price tag than a JJB sized guard.

I know you're a huge fan - we've argued this one before. I think the guy is a little bit crazy on the floor, prone to doing things with the ball he shouldn't, when the ball should actually go to the more talented players. I think he has lost a step on defense over the past couple of seasons, and I think it's really telling that Boston wouldn't want to keep him.
I know he's local, but I think this is Delon Wright/Josh Richardson all over again.

I like Smart's impact but I can see him dribbling the ball up the floor in crunch time and jacking up a three and Luka losing his mind.

I agree, but I'm not the one making the decisions. They DO seem to be focused on PG's, and have been for a while. Maybe it has something to do with finding players with actual EXPERIENCE guarding the point of attack? I bet the vast majority of those are smaller, tbh.
I think there are benefits on offense to employing a waterbug, too, and most of them aren't possessed by Brunson, unfortunately, though I do admire him as a player.

I agree it's the right approach, what I disagree with is how they're just going for the players who look that way on paper because it just hasn't worked out when we're scraping from the bottom of the barrel the past couple offseasons. I just hope at the end of the day that if we don't think the guys out there are very good then we ignore them regardless of how they look on paper next to Luka. I also hope that we remember we do have arguably one of the quickest dudes in the NBA right now on our roster who may be ready for some more burn next season in Josh Green...
We need more play making and we need someone to guard point guards, those things coming from two different people is not the end of the world, there's only so many Jrue Holiday types out there who can do both at a high level so we shouldn't waste time trying to convince ourselves that someone who is average at both like Dennis Schroder is going to help us in the playoffs. I actually used to think that he could do both those things for us but I think his quick fall from grace in LA was very telling.

Players that have a bigger impact on winning than their traditional box score numbers would indicate.
Marvin Bagley could average 18/9 and hurt your team. Alex Caruso could average 6/2/2 and help you win.

I agree the defense would be sub-par... I just don't see who's out there in the market that's gonna elevate this team's defense a whole lot. Maybe Simmons maybe Wiggins but both of these guys would only come to dallas if we we're unloading KP in a trade. I'd do it for either one but I'm not sure GSW or PHI want's KP
If we could trade for one of these players i'd still love the idea of getting DeRozan too

You may be right. If so, then so be it, and the Mavs will have to pick and hopefully find the right answers from whatever that reality is. (BTW, I'm not sure why you keep trying to create something adversarial, as I'm not arguing with you or anyone else on these numbers, before or now. I have no interest in that sort of conversation over upcoming salaries. They will be whatever they will be, we can't argue them into existence at any particular price.)
Although, if I understood your post correctly, you do think some will be getting more, and some will be getting less, so not sure how to interpret your saying that we should expect each free agent player to get paid more than they're worth.

Could be but you already know my response. When Lowry and Butler are doing some crazy things it is all about winning intangibles. For some reason the same logic isn´t used in Smart´s case. Also think that even if he lost half of his defensive impact he would still be far better than Wright or Richardson.
I am not willing to give up a lot but if the Celtics want to create some additional room under the luxury line or even look at cap room I would be willing to send them a smaller salary (Burke/WCS) and a protected 1st in return.

I think it's case by case.
I am not a Celtics fan, so I watch maybe 10 of their games per season. Almost every time I see them, Smart does 3-4 things that would make me angry if he was on my team.
Now, he USED to do 5-6 other things that would make me love him, too. Listening to Simmons (who we all know IS a Celtics fan) over the past few years, he has become increasingly down on Smart. He and MacMullen (sp?) just talked about how Smart is "tired of being known as a defensive player" on the podcast yesterday.
Idk, part of me thinks he's exactly what they need and another part of me thinks he has a screw lose, and not in an awesome Jimmy Butler sort of way.

If Derozan was the focus, then I think you would need to target someone like Danny Green to pair with him. It would be nice if they could use the Powell salary to either free up space or get another 4ish type.
Your closing lineups would be Luka, Derozan, DFS, Green and KP. Green guards the best guard. DFS guards the best wing scorer. Luka probably guards the more physical PF type. It would really help if KP became a solid D player again.
Then you have Maxi, Green, Brunson, WCS, and maybe one more player with either Powell clearing space or getting via trade.
I think that team is good.

OMG, if I ever hear that Cuban had the chance to trade KP for Turner/Brogdon and didn't do it...
...that will be the beginning of a series of events that lands me in the penitentiary.
