I said Carlisle should do it, when we needed extra rest for Luka early in the 4th quarter, instead Carlisle just watched while our leads evaporated. Could have used his anger issues for something good. Yell at Trey Burke and throw his drink on the floor in anger.

I'm hoping for the best. I think Kidd could have a lot of upside and hopefully has learned a lot in LA. He's also been coaching LeBron which could help him coach Luka. Nobody coaches LeBron.

Saw Carlisle & Kidd as the most likely potential moves immediately post Donnie, although wasn't outright sure. My crystal ball was a little foggy that day. For the record I really like the Kidd move and the Carlisle move. I think Rick had a great run and was out of moves for this group. Kidd tbqh I have no idea as how good a real coach he is or will be, X's and O's etc. but in theory he should be after his stellar HoF PG career. He's young so I hope he assembles a great staff around himself. One day I may have to tell the story about how I met Jason Kidd, very briefly ... at the Playboy Mansion.

Pretty good post, you know Kidd actually won a playoff series as a rookie head coach and that was far more recently than the last playoff series won by Rick Carlisle. He took the Bucks from a 15 win team to the playoffs, and won a ring as an assistant in LA. Plus he just understands the game and might actually be able to teach Luka something since he’s one of the only other people on planet earth with a comparable bball IQ. This will be fun!

I don't love the Kidd signing from an Xs and Os standpoint, but I love it from a Luka standpoint. The Mavs put a ridiculous amount of workload on a 22 year old's plate, both on the court and in the lockerroom. We make a lot about how big of a deal it was to lose veteran leadership like JJB, but that's also compounded by a head coach who's not great at human relationships. Carlisle acquiesce to Luka, but that doesn't address the core issue that you have a 22 year old kid in way over his head. He's not 28 year old Michael Jordan, he needs guidance too. If KP is being a putz and he and Luka aren't on speaking terms, it's up to the head coach to deal with the issue rather than leave it to Luka to figure out on his own. That Kidd was brought to LA simply because LeBron thought that highly of him speaks to how much weight his reputation still carries.
As far as the fear of being a "Mark Puppet", while there is familiarity between Kidd and Mark, I don't see Kidd being some shrinking violet within the organization who just kowtows to Cuban because he's scared to voice his opinion.

If it's going to be a "we're getting the band back together" staff, I'd rather bring in Stotts as the offensive coordinator. Love Jason Terry, but he really don't need to have a spot on this staff. He was an assistant on the University of Arizona and from all accounts his biggest asset was recruiting.

I like me some former Mavs but I don´t want a "banana boat Mavs edition" coaching staff. Need some experience as well. Should be JJB or Terry. Not both.

Uh, Kidd did leave Cuban at the altar once as a free agent. He is not afraid of him.

Tyson Chandler for defensive big man coach, let’s do this!

I wonder if that will blow over a bit, or if people will dig the argument up every couple of months. Kidd clearly has some faults and has had some ups and downs at his first two spots. I think getting really good assistants will be key. as much as I like Jet, I would prefer we go in another direction. Maybe JJB can be the last coach on the bench or behind the bench, but we need some experience next to Kidd. Does everyone know Popeye Jones is an asst coach with the Sixers and DaSagana Diop is an asst with the Rockets? Interesting that several former mavs are trying to get into coaching.

Kidd needs to use his rolodex and bring in real assistants with experience...not just 2011 alumni to make the homers happy. It's probably going to include Joe Prunty, who was on his bench in Brooklyn and Milwaukee and also was assistant to Avery for a few years here.
If you want to give JJB/Jet whoever developmental coach roles like Darrell Armstrong then fine but I don't want them as part of the core assistants.

In all seriousness, I am open to the possibility works out here...I think have a good infrastructure with the coaching staff and good communication with the front office will be important.
I am not sure who they interviewed, but I would have been in favor of interviewing a few more candidates. Did Dirk interview Kidd or did he just vouch for him due to their relationship. I would have liked to see a few more people brought in. Especially some of the impressive younger candidates. |
