2020-2021 ROSTER TALK: Archived

- Is DFS an elite 3&D wing; or is he a low-mistake minutes-eater who played within the system?
- Is Brunson a starter in this league; or is he a career backup?

- Where in the line in the bigs rotation is Powell? if lower than second big, is he overpaid?

We really don´t know what is going to happen but if they want to continue with the analytics based approach...

Assuming that the Wiggins for KP deal was and still is an option. Why not go for it and embrace the modern style. No more big contracts for bigmen. All in on wing defense, shooting and playmaking.

1) KP for Wiggins.
2 Resign THJ. 15m /4 years.
3) Sign Duncan Robinson (might need to waive/trade/dump Burke or one of the rookies). 19-20m/4 years
4) rMLE for a big wing like Tucker or a small ball big like Theis.

Positionless basketball. Four wing sized players and a small ball big. Switch everything on defense. Lead the league in 3-point attempts on offense.

Doncic/Robinson/Wiggins/DFS/Theis or Donic/THJ/Robinson/Wiggins/Theis.

I like the plan, I would just prefer KP for Hayward instead of Wiggins Smile

This thing is wide open. When a new leader comes in LOTS of things tend to change over time, including things like culture.  The Mavs have always been a no-knuckleheads team. Culture guys like Powell were valued maybe beyond what they could contribute on the court.

Will that remain the same or will the new guy just care if guys can play? For example, Masai Ujiri himself noted that he brought some misfits to Toronto.

Will the new regime put more value on youth, speed, athleticism? Or skill, experience, shooting? Or a more balanced approach?

Certainly, guys who we've heard speculation about e.g. Devonte Graham is a guy the Mavs like, no longer applies.

doh. didn't think of it at that angle.

That really sucks for Jackson. He has to go to a bad team for more money or take the MLE... Sucks to suck.

Good points Dan. I think we've all been thinking it for sure. Anyone but Luka is on the table and non guaranteed to be back.
If I were to guess as to the plan of what the next GM would be it would be to create as much ammo as possible to build out the team (assuming the GM isn't Finley).

What does that mean? Currently we have no draft picks, we can have cap space, and we have some assets like Brunson that can be flipped into something else.
Honestly the only guy outside of Luka/KP that you can say is a very good starter here is DFS. Everyone else is a meh guy or a bench guy or a role guy. Brunson is a very solid player and has value. He's no starter with Luka.

If I'm coming into make over team my #1 priority is addressing the top end of your lineup which is your starters. Both DFS and KP could have better players as your starters but you straight up have 2 horrible starter spots. Keep in mind I'm talking about the season as a whole and not the Clippers series where KP was game planned out.

So anyone but Luka, KP and DFS should be looking to be turned into starters or assets that help you get those starters. And a star might arrive when those guys come. Ideally it would. Simultaneously you should be looking to upgrade you established good starters as you are making these moves. Obviously you aren't trading Luka but you need to be also looking for ways to make him better. You don't have to trade KP, but you need to find ways to make him better. Same for DFS.

I suggested this earlier in the year and I'll suggest it again. THJ is not a starter. He's a very nice player. Mavs should look at SNT him into something else that gives you an asset or turns into a legit starter.

Brunson is an asset this year. But he won't be an asset next year when he has to get paid. You need to flip into something else or turn him into a legit starter.
I like alot of our guys, but I hope our new GM is ruthless with the roster overhaul and we say an entirely new team with flexibility to do more.

Hopefully that makes some sort of coherent sense.

Something like JRich + Brunson for a Burks sign and trade could be nice. He's a good shooter/solid defender and could keep THJ coming off the bench. Then go get a vet backup pg like Rubio or Dragic.

Yes, and it's so so bizarre that we still don't know where the last staff had him, let alone where he'll be in the rotation next year.

Not sure why ppl hate Wiggins so much, you are not counting on him to be a top guy. At any rate KP's value is so bad GSW might need even trade you Wiggins straight up for KP.

Media narrative of the last couple of years. Wiggins improved. Good on ball defense. Above average 3-point shooting. Solid scoring volume.

Just ignore the name. 26 year olds. Averaged 19/5/2. 48/38/71 shooting splits. Above average defender. Sounds good.

I mean, I don't disagree with you, but...I think you're kind of taking the opposite side of the WCS argument here. I know the situations aren't mirrors of each other, and Wiggins is on a completely different level as a player. I get that.

But, I think like WCS, Wiggins is the type who does some good things and flashes lots of talent, but watching him everyday will make some people despise having him on the team. Knowing how you feel about WCS, I'm surprised you're pro-Wiggins.

Now, the fact that he can run, jump and move probably means the Mavs would be better off with him than KP. I guess there really aren't that many elegant solutions at this point.

Another guy who could be available on the cheap is Nurkic. I would like him as a rotational big on this team.

I´ll say this. After everything we heard over the last week, I´m actually excited to see the rookies play some SummerLeague, please tell me there is one?

Furthermore I´m still hopeful the new GM will get us a late or very early 2nd round pick from Lakers (22), Utah (30) or Milwaukee (31) for Carlisle.

Cheap? Unlikely.
Rotational big? Eh, don´t tell him that.

He´d be a starter anyway.

I don't know how his contract works, but I feel like if this was even the remotest of possibilities we'd see some talk about it. I wouldn't hold onto too much hope for this.

I have been pro-Carlisle for years, but one of the things I'm most looking forward to is having a coach who might develop non-Luka/Brunson rookies (or, in our case, second-year players).

Carlisle is no longer Mavs coach, which means contract was terminated.

So he'd be a starter. Price I don't know, I mean cheap bc he has 1 year at low money and is unhappy so that lowers his value a little bit. I want a guy who is okay if I have to sit him the last 6 minutes when the team is running small. If Nurkic is going to have a hissy fit ab that then ya I don't want him.

No it does not. We have absolutely no idea what contract Carlisle has signed. Does he have a release clause?

For now Carlisle resigned, he was not fired.

Now Cuban can accept his resignation and that means Carlisle is free and forfeits the remaining (~$15M) of his contract. Or Cuban says no and pays Carlisle to sit around for two years. Then he cannot take another coaching job.

Most likely, given that it´s Cuban, and he does not value draft picks at all he said: You can go, but that means you forfeit the remaining money.

But we will not know the details until Carlisle tries to/signs a contract elsewhere.
