2020-2021 ROSTER TALK: Archived
KL would never consider us. Almost like saying what if Lebron came here?

If we want to dream a real dream then Jokic is the guy

He didn't really cost a FRP. The cost was a switch of (very late) FRP for a very high SRP and a switch of 2022 FRP for 2023 FRP.

Is it the system? Or the player?

I feel like RC's system historically caters to players of WCS's archetype. We all said it when they made the trade that he'd fit well. WCS HAS performed well during certain stretches, no doubt about that. But he still leaves a lot to be desired.

I think this team would be much better with Baynes instead of WCS and I have zero doubts about that. Unfortunately he was too expensive.

Leonard on the Mavs would make us the title favorite instantly and it's hard to see another team challenge us.

I mean sheesh, KL brings literally everything we need and then some more. He theoretically fits perfectly next to Luka/KP as well. It'd be unfair. We'd probably have to trade Brunson to grab a starting SG, unless there is a quality-past-his-prime 2 that wants to sign for the minimum (JJ Reddick anyone?). But that theoretical starting lineup of

Luka/---/Leonard/Maxi/KP is not only massive but defensively a monster. One can dream.

Brad is right. We should’ve seen this coming with the playoffs including 2/3 of the league. Stand pat is likely the best move.

The real hope would be lucking into dragic in a 3 team trade

There was a reason the Rockets only managed to trade Tucker just now in late March. I think they had an unreasonable expectation of his value, and were probably adamant in getting a FRP for him.

The reality was no one wanted to spend that for PJ Tucker, and it ended with a swap picks.

I do think that Gordon and Collins cost probably a bit more than what we're all expecting, but probably not some treasure trove of assets.

I was saying last night that JB with how well he has been playing this year (last night not withstanding) SHOULD be enough alone to get Gordon. JJ/JB for AG straight up would be a pretty good trade IMO. I’d tip a second in there if necessary, but a first is right out... I guess a first pick swap in 2022 to them since that seems to be a thing right now.

Yeah, PJ Tucker is looking pretty washed up this year.   Obviously the situation in Houston isn't good, but he's 35 years old and has seen a noticable decline in all of his shooting and efficiency number.

I think as fans there is another form of "homerism" where you just basically way over-exaggerate how flawed your players are compared to other  players in the league, because you're up close and personal with them and see them every game.    I mean, people act like our role players couldn't make 3rd team on another team who can't even make the playoffs in the East.    I assure everyone other team's role players are deeply flawed too, we just don't spend enough time or have enough invested in them night in and night out with them to notice or care.    This also often causes us to over-estimate other team's players.   I believe I saw Tim Cato call Aaron Gordon a "star".   I'm sorry, in what world is Aaron Gordon a "star"?     Because he has cool Dunk Contest appearances?   That makes Derrick Jones Jr a "star".

That said ... I don't expect a lot of trades, by the Mavs or many other teams, mainly because I don't think NBA teams trade as much as they logically should.   Particularly teams that should be sellers.   And that's mainly because GMs often don't prioritize maximizing assets.   The first thing most  GMs prioritize is keeping their jobs, and particularly GMs of bad teams who logically should be sellers because they're usually on the hot seat.      Selling assets on the trade market requires going up stairs to the ownership and explaining to them how you're giving away your best players and hurting your chances to compete in the near term.   Owners don't fork out millions/billions of dollars to buy vanity project sports teams to lose games and rebuild.     Second, trading brings a lot more scrutiny with fans and media because you could "lose" the trade.   As far as keeping your job, it's probably better to just let an asset walk away for nothing than to risk the fan and media scrutiny of "losing" a trade.

I'm not going that far.  He obviously isn't liking the Clipps position presently.  He's been uncharacteristically vocal about their problems lately.  They don't have a Luka Magic guy, because he's figuring out that "Playoff P" was a question begging an answer rather than an actual nickname.

I could see Kawhi just retiring after this contract is over if the Clippers look like a lost cause.   He'll be 30.   He's had injury problems.    I think he's starting to physically drop off a little bit (though still very good), especially on defense.   I don't think he wants to leave SoCal.  He's already got the rings.   He's already got the Hall of Fame credentials.   He's already got the money.   He doesn't want/need the attention or the limelight.    He's not trying to make Space Jam 4.

I agree. Look up "enigmatic" in the dictionary and you'll probably see:

en·ig·mat·ic
/ˌenəɡˈmadik/

adjective
adjective: enigmatic

  1. difficult to interpret or understand; mysterious.

Rather than sign Collins and one of either THJ or J-Rich, you could spend it all on a max deal for Kawhi Leonard. Even keeping WCS, there's enough.

But then the rest of your spending would be limited to 3 minimum salary players , plus the room MLE on a 4th.

If he was interested, would ya?

This is the most obvious question ever asked but of course as others have said there is no chance this is going to happen.

Mavs may just play the buyout game to see what's available. JJ has been useful from time to time but seems like he would be the odd man out if Mavs found a buyout player they like better. Iwundu would be the other guy.

I thought previously Iwundu would be the first guy cut but he has some really good defensive skills. JJ also is a good defender but Iwundu is a guy you can throw at Kawhi or Paul George when you need someone to really harass a top scoring wing.

Soon some more good players on bad teams will get bought out and join contenders who then have to release somebody. Someone, somewhere could shake loose that the Mavs are interested in.

Looks like everybody is "unlikely" to be moved despite a fantastic seller's market?

I see we've reached the stage of the trade season where known sellers start pretending that they would actually be perfectly happy to continue paying big money for a poor product with crippled revenues. We'll see.

The Hawks are in 6th place which is surprising so I guess it makes sense why they would not be automatic sellers. They finally want to make the playoffs.
