2020-2021 ROSTER TALK: Archived

Let's not forget Luka is only 21 and Jalen Brunson tells him where to go on defense! Luka is still just a kid.

He's a basketball savant ...but truely leading a team of veterans is a skill that will come with age and maturity

I really thought Turner was on his way out but with the way he's been playing D, I can't imagine Indy would trade him.  Not a bad thought though.

Speaking of tiffs, and maybe it's just his more reserved personality, but it always feels like Jalen isn't happy with his place on the team.

I can see where you might get this but I see it another way. I see an extremely hard-nosed player who just keep coming. Nothing has ever been handed to him. He's turning himself into a fantastic contributor and his role and coaching have a lot to do with it. He's a guard version Dwight Powell and if he keeps improving he will force his way into the starting lineup, just like Powell did. I don't know where Brunson's ceiling is but it wouldn't shock me for him to have a Van Vleet -type career trajectory.

What makes you say this?

I’ll answer with what I think could be seen as this. His JJB mentality of hero ball moments. Not sure if it is a tiff or him just learning NBA ball from JJB the last couple years.

I would love to, but I don't think Indy will be trading anyone. Unless Indy is in love with KP, I just don't see it. So, very much on the optimistic side, assuming Indy loves KP:

Dal: Turner, Gordon
Indy: KP
Orl: Aaron Holiday, Lamb, Ind pick, Dal pick (or couple of seconds)

It's his personality and the way he answers questions.  Maybe I'm just so used to everyone glowing about Luka and he comes off far more reserved.  Nothing to do with his on the court successes or struggles.  I think JB has been the lone bright spot this season.

Interesting. I hadn't noticed anything odd about his personality in interviews, but I'll look harder.

I proposed a trade earlier with KP going to Atl and Maxi/JRich going to Ind with Collins and Turner coming here. I think Collins is worth more than AG so is there maybe a 4 team trade with Vuc outgoing to some team and us getting those 2 with KP, Maxi and JRich? I’ll work on it too.

I'm probably making a mountain out of it.  Listen to THJ talk about Luka.  "That's Luka Magic" or "That's why we call him the Don".  And the Brunson.  "Luka is good, obviously."  He might just not be as emphatic with praise.

So, regarding Turner:

He's having a great season and restoring his intrigue for me, particularly on defense. I'm a believer.

But, the reason people say he's available is that there's a narrative that he doesn't fit well with Sabonis. Now, I don't watch Indiana enough to know why that thought is out there, so I can't vouch for it. It seems like Sabonis is mostly a paint guy, so is the thinking that Turner's catch and shoot game just doesn't extend out far enough to provide for adequate spacing? Idk, like I said, but I'd want to form an educated opinion on this before going in for Turner as a target here, especially WITH Collins.

I will say this: Turner is one of very few people I'd be willing to try WITH Porzingis.

They are both centers, especially on defense. Turner is a rim protector, but can defend on perimeter too, at least a bit . Sabonis can't guard perimeter. So playing them together means that you are putting elite rim protector on perimeter, not maximizing his strengths. I guess it would be very similar with KP.

This is why I think Maxi is a perfect fit next to Sabonis.

Here's some bones to a trade that might work. Might need some picks being sent to even out value and I don't like the 4 for 1 with Was.

https://tradenba.com/trades/omsOZl6UR

JB/Burke/TT
Luka/THJ/Green
DFS/Holiday/Iwundu
AG/Powell/JJ
Turner/WCS/Boban

Use JJ's expiring (and maybe one or two of the rookies) to move one or more of Powell, Burke, WCS, Iwundu, Boban to either get an upgrade to DFS (unlikely) or better fitting backups for the PF and PG spots.

Aaron Gordon doesnt really move the needle for me. I think you'd have to give up some good assets to get him and it would end up being a lateral move.

Another thing to worry about with KP is if he already doesn't like sharing the limelight with Luka then what happens if the Mavs are lucky enough to land a third star player? I am getting used to the idea that he will be traded if a good offer is made. I don't believe they will sell him for 50 cents on the dollar.

I think he's a step above any of the guys we have on roster sans Luka and KP.

He's a difference maker on defense, I think.

Offensively, he's like Powell, which is great IF Porzingis is content to stand in the corner again. I don't think his catch and shoot game is good enough to space FOR Porzingis.
