DAL OFFSEASON: Trade & FA | Mavs "mostly done...but you never know."
Quote:According to a person familiar with Hayward’s thinking, the 30-year-old former All-Star wants to continue to be a core part of a winning team and would not want to go to Atlanta. Hayward delaying his $34 million player option deadline to Thursday at 5 p.m. ET indicates that he wants more options. This rumor that the Hawks are in play seems like posturing to create a perception of leverage, that Hayward would be happy to join Atlanta either on his current contract or in a new multi-year deal.

It all would be highly plausible if Hayward had continued his strong season in the playoffs and showed he was an integral part of a winning team. Instead, the Celtics survived without him and made a deep run, even if it was apparent the team would have been much better with him. Front-office personnel who spoke with The Athletic after the postseason and in the lead-up to this week agreed that the optics of his August ankle sprain, as well as his struggles when he returned in the conference finals, dramatically hampered the likelihood of a multi-year deal this offseason. Hayward suffered nerve irritation and deep bone bruising from that ankle sprain, and it’s hard to imagine a team besides Boston committing to him long-term right now because of the medical uncertainty.

I'm late but I wouldn't be mad at this haul.

Also, as an aside, I don't know what y'all expect the Mavs to do. Seeing the last couple of trades, there seems to be a common theme in all of them. Overpay. Schroeder for a 1st rounder+a solid vet might be the most even of all of them and even then I'd be uncomfortable if the Mavs made that trade. 3 FRP for Jrue?? Bogi might have been within the Mavs grasp but still 3 for 1 is rare, and Bogi ain't a star.

If the Mavs find a way to get Danny Green and PJ Tucker for just 31+MLE thats a freakin steal. 2 vets that bring shooting and defense that's exactly what we need. Add in Hayward or Dipo and we add playmaking and scoring AND additional defense. Isn't that EVERYTHING we've been lamenting for?

Sure they have their warts. Green being a primadona and kinda an asshole for stringing the Mavs along. Tucker not being content with his contract. Dipo+Hayward with injury concerns and a potential massive extension looming. But if we've seen anything, no player is untradeable. I mean sheesh Harden is looking to be on his way out the door in Houston. Who could've seen that coming?

I wonder what "not free" means to Dwight Howard. Looks like the Lakers are looking to basement bargain bin him again.

So it´s really Parsons 2.0. Now I would not be surprised, if there is no interest at all for Hayward. That it is all coming from his agent, trying to bait some stupid FO into giving him a long-term deal. At least Oladipo has accepted that he needs to perform next season to get a new big contract. Hayward just wants it for free.

Please keep in mind that:

-I don't want either.

...but Hayward has a helluva lot more than one good season as a track record.

This is where I’m at too.

Id love for them to make a splash but not at these prices. Not when the Mavs aren’t desperate yet and are steel at least a year away from really contending.

Make a couple smart moves. Improve this year. Then try to make a move next year at the deadline or in the offseason.

"That is something that could be resolved quickly if a doctor can review Hayward’s medicals, but the Celtics and Hayward’s camp are unlikely to let that happen. Not to mention, these deals move too fast to pull something like that off on such short notice, though it’s always possible.

There is nothing misleading about reports that there is widespread interest in Hayward. But those claims don’t come with a price tag attached. Plenty of teams would love to have him, but not if it costs anything in assets or at a long-term salary."

This is also from that same Athletic story talking about the bone bruise and nerve issues.  Maybe Donnie can get it done cheap, if not then step away.  Ainge has dumped injured players before (IT for KI).  I really don't trust him but I think Boston needs this to happen and may be willing to work it out.  Still, I hate to do business with Ainge.  Like anything, we need to see the contract numbers/assets lost to judge if Hayward should come to Dallas.

The thing is he played for the Celtics in 3 seasons and missed the majority of their postseason. Missed 31 out of 45 playoff games. You could argue that his time with the Celtics was the same as Parsons with the Mavs. Always unavailable when it matters most.

If we are bound and determined to work out a trade for Hayward and the sides can't come to terms on compensation I wonder if Smart could be worked into the deal. That's probably too much outgoing salary for the Mavs to match.

Smart is heart and soul of that team. He will not be traded unless trully something huge is on the line. Getting rid of Hayward is not it.

Danny Ainge traded Paul Pierce, KG and is shopping Kemba after one year.  That doesn't factor in Hayward who they aren't committing to after three years and as much as the fans love Smart, he's prone to late game blunders that make them pull their hair out. Tatum and no one else are safe on that team.

I think on the Hayward front the non-Atlanta option would probably be the Pacers. They would send Miles Turner for Hayward and Celtics might throw in at least one pick. Pacers have no 1st round pick this year and Celtics have too many. I don't think the Mavs are in the mix.

I am still betting my money on some kind of Oladipo move by the Mavs. I think you might be able to get him for THJ straight up on Thursday.

Weds: Draft wing #18, trade Wright/Jax/#31 for a vet (Oubre, Tucker, or Green?)
Thurs: THJ for Dipo
Later: MLE on another vet or two (Gallo, Millsap will be out of Mavs price range)

Unrelated to free agency:

Maxi was on a german podcast on the weekend for 10 minutes, and said he injured his wrist in 1st game of the bubble, and broke a small finger on the left hand in his 3rd game in the bubble. He didn't really use it as an excuse for his shooting in the playoffs, just mentioned it randomly few minutes later.

He didn't do basketball activities in germany, just working out. Resting his wrist (capulse). He said that he is back for 2.5 weeks in DAL, and some guys are already working out with him. Brunson and Co.

He also said he (they) was kinda surprised by the early december start, and the initial plan for him was going back to germany (i assume for christmas). He said he is likely gonna stay in DAL now until camp. Said its easier for him to workout in DAL at the facility.

That would help explain why Maxi was shooting so poorly.

Fish still thinks its Dipo on draft night:

I am not sure how that's done unless it's either Wright/Jax/Boban + pick or an "unannounced" deal that doesn't become public until Thursday. Mavs draft a Pacers player with the pick and if THJ miraculously opts-out (which 99% won't happen) there is a backup deal in place whereby Mavs get a future pick or there's some other contingency to make sure the Mavs aren't stuck with a Pacers drafted player.

I just hope they don't do something silly like bring him back for more money. Plenty of centers out there. Hartenstein or Luka buddy Hernangomez would be two cheap young options with potential upside.
