DAL OFFSEASON: Trade & FA | Mavs "mostly done...but you never know."
(11-11-2020, 12:47 PM)Tyler Wrote: Just thinking about team motivations for a minute.

Without Paul, OKC is looking at a virtual blank slate in 2021 salary. Combine that with a full rebuild, and they're in a good position to absorb some salaries if it acquires affordable young assets and picks. With SGA and Dort, they also seem to have a direction in the backcourt.

The Clippers need a PG. Beverley is not only the obvious trade match for Rubio, but it also sounds like he's been in the anti-Kawhi/George camp. So I'm guessing he's in the deal.

Dallas wants cap space for '21. They also want a defender at PG and an upgrade at wing, and seem willing to trade the pick to make it happen.

Put it all together, and I could see a scenario where Dallas gets both Beverley and Oubre (two Duffy clients, FWIW).

Paul to Phoenix
Rubio to LA
Beverley/Oubre to Dallas
Shamet/DFS/10/18 and Dallas cap filler to OKC

That cap filler would have to be about $20mm. So for arguments sake, make it Wright and Powell. By sending them long-term deals, Dallas can afford Beverley while still creating lots of space in '21. And I bet OKC could make good use of them as well both now and in the future. Note that a few minor players may also have to be sent out by OKC to LA/Phoenix just to manage roster slots, but that's so simple I consider it noise.

Long story short, I think that's the sort of deal that fits the needs and character of each team.

Would you trade DFS/Wright/Powell/18 for Oubre/Beverley?

No way.
Why are we paying #18 to swap Wright/DFS into Oubre/Beverly?
I wouldn't do this without the pick.

DFS is only in a deal for a Superstar.

LOL no we aren't. He was already overpaid at his extension, then he had the most damaging injury in sports when the physical aspect of his game hinges completely on athleticism. He is paid like a 5th-best player when he will struggle to return to being physically capable of cracking the 10-man rotation. Failing to dump his contract if the opportunity arose would be self-destructive.

Honest question. Huh

As far as I can tell it was another random "source" online claiming it to be somewhere...
This is why I hate just posting anyone that claims to have knowledge of anything. IT gets confusing as heck when you have 3 or 4 page conversations about a rumor stated as fact.

The thing is Knicks Film School is a fairly legit source for this stuff. I mean, it's not Woj, Stein, etc. That's for sure. But it's easily as credible as Fish, Mavs Money Ball, etc. It's one of the NY equivalents of those sources. Way, WAY more credible than All Things Mavs, for example.

If your overall point is that it could be BS, then sure. But you can say that about almost every rumor out there.
Killer is correct about J Macri of Knicks Film School...I've posted their rumors for several years now...
Josh Green is a top 5 Mavs player...

You guys seriously don't see the problem about posting random information from the internet in between legit reporting or rumors from legit sources, during  the time where these things are flying around?

This last one was talked about so much and like it was indeed factual/legit that it took me a bit to go find the original source a few pages back. Sounds like you duped Mavs2019 as well.

There's a difference between legit rumors and rando's on the internet spouting stuff for clicks.
Perhaps its not the rumor being posted itself but the pages long discussion with it being discussed as if a fact that is confusing the heck out of me that is irritating me.

Seeing someone reply to a question with a validity with "No this is real" kind of did it for me.

Anyways I said my peace. Some of y'all disagree. So pointless to really bring it up anymore.

I LOL'd when I saw that @"IamDougieFresh" liked this post. My dude is just hiding in the shadows looking for opportunity to hate on Powell, and I am absolutely here to see it. Good stuff.

FWIW, I agree with the post-injury portion of this message, but I don't think he was overpaid before that. Criminally underrated around here, actually. Ultimately, however, I won't disagree that given the plans we think the team has for the near future, you have to consider moving him if you can.

Cjeter, glad you're back, but I would hope the board would be a source of enjoyment and relaxation for you, not irritation and stress. This topic of the Mavs being including in the CP3-to-the-Suns talks had (as Clutch has testified) a very solid source, and has since been backed up by multiple outlets. It isn't the same as the Hawks troll, whose stuff seems to range from spitballing to having some basis but will never become public. No need to get upset.

What I'm saying is that, for ME, Knicks Film School IS a legit source. At least, as legit as 90% of our other sources. I listen to that dude's podcast all the time.

Hard to say what a "two-way contract" is going to mean when there may not be a G League. Part-time available roster supplement guys?

LOL yes you are.  You act like he has no chance of ever contributing again.  I'm not that cynical.

We can argue if his extension was an overpay but it wasn't absurd.  Dumping his contract now is as expensive as it will ever be given the nature of his injury, the unknown of what he'll look like when he returns and years left on his contract.   We have precious few assets so they can't be used on a whim.  Powell has been the epitome of hard work and class on the court, in the locker room and the community.  That has value.  Give him the year to see what he looks like and then make trade plans based on what you see and when he only has two years left on his deal.

And I'm not saying to not trade him given the opportunity.  By my estimation we have five desirable trade pieces that we'd be willing to part with (18, 31, Curry, DFS, Maxi) given the opportunity.  You can't just burn one or more of those to move off of Powell.  If we are going to let any of those go, it has to be a no brainer in the favor of the Mavs and returns value on the court. And I don't want to hear about cap space as MBT haven't proven then know how to use that.

You gotta give to get.

As far as the Mavs go, given our earlier discussion of the Mavs and Suns jockeying for Western Conference pecking order, I think it behooves the Mavs to get into this deal in such a way 1) to benefit for themselves, certainly, but also 2) to prevent the Suns from getting too good. A Suns team that comes away from the table with CP3 while still having Booker, Ayton, Bridges, and the 10th pick is a problem for the Mavs.

If their bubble performance wasn't a fluke, they are already a problem.

This one is legit? Cool.

This proves my point about why it's so bad to post randos on the internet trolling for clicks claiming to have sources. It's hard to distinguish the trash from someone somewhat reputable but that doesn't have any name recognition. Random Knicks site most of us probably didn't know about before 24 hours ago is hard to distinguish from a Hawks site doing the same.

I'm wrong on this guy but the point still stands.

Entire system has been flawed for years. Really don´t understand why they aren´t changing the roster size and the g-league/NBA franchise/development team construct.
My favorit proposal. NBA teams are forced to operate a g-league affiliate. Increase roster size to 15+5 (development spots for players under 25 or with less than 5 years of NBA experience). Add a 3rd draft round.
League has already tried to make some changes but not all owners are willing to pay for a g-league team and the NBPA is trying to protect the interests of current players. They are afraid that more players would lead to lower average salaries around the league.

I think the overarching theme is that even if it is trash, it encourages discussions of the trade ideas. And it's hard to ever know what is trash or not because most of the trades that NBA team talk about amongst themselves, never materialize so it makes grading a source almost impossible. I favor more discussion as I like this board and it could certainly use more activity.

A little, except this guy talks to more people than just the Knicks. I don't think the Knicks give him access, their fan interest is just his target demo.

FWIW, it's being picked up by other sources now. This guy is the original they're all quoting, and it's definitely just a rumor, but what the hell else are we supposed to discuss?
