I expected a player option. Russell could easily get more than the TP-MLE right now from some team (say the Nuggets right now) that has their MLE.

He's taking a risk with a big role on a premier team that needs his services that he'll be showcased so he can parlay that into a bigger deal next season.

Player option is 100% justified for that.

I don't disagree.  Just hopeful when it was not reported at first.  He is either going to be a one and done (most likely) or dead weight next year.

Grimes trade was awful negotiating, of course. But Grimes could not be kept. His demands were bigger and Mavs payroll was smaller - and this was before Mavs won #1 pick which added almost 9M more to the payroll (vs #11).

Undo the swap and Grimes is gone anyhow, walking as a FA because Mavs would only have about 10M to offer him (hard capped @ A2). However, salary now going to CM likely could not have been spent elsewhere if Mavs had kept QG, as Mavs only have cap permission for MLE and minimums.

So analysis is: do we prefer CM, or wish we had air + SRP? It's all about what value we see in CM. I would prob prefer air ie keep QG (who walks) + SRP pick (which I woulda swapped for a future pick), due to CM's ongoing salary.

Grimes is still out there. He's looking for more than teams are willing to pay for a half a season on a heater because he was the only option for points on a injury riddled team.

Exactly. It´s not even a heater issue either. It´s a capspace availiability issue. A good GM would have understood this. He won´t get more than the MLE, unless it is from Philly or a S+T, cause the money is simply not there. He won´t get much more than Martin, despite being a much better player and a player the Mavs desperately need right now. Nico just doubled down on stupid.

Dlo and AD highlights. I think the key for this thing to work is for Dlo to be able to get others good looks. That is probably why I am not as high on this signing despite getting a good deal on a contract. Time will tell.

It's just funny trade your PG because doesn't play defense and sign a chair 6 months later... But obviously Silver was the reason. Not Luka.

Somehow, we expect more from our $50 million more.

Most years, Dlo is averaging about 6 assists per 30 minutes played, so he's not bad in that department. There are games where I think his decsison-making short circuits a lot. He shoots when he shouldn't or doesn't make the play he should. He's going to require to some discipline from Kidd.

I feel better if Exum is acquired so that we can replace Dlo's erratic play quickly off the bench.

As a restricted free agent, Philly has some control over the situation, especially given the lack of cap space out there.  They may get an asset in a S&T or they may sign him to roughly MLE because he can't get more elsewhere.  So it might have been Caleb vs air and a couple of seconds, or it may have been Caleb vs Grimes + using that second to get off some salary and trade for a PG.

Yeah, they need one more point guard.  No way they can go into the year with Dlo and Williams only with a two way guy.   Exum obviously has injury concerns, but can be a 15-20 minute player and produce.    The three of them should be able to produce at least a tad below average PG play, which should be ok for half the season.

I would hope they have spoken to Exum or someone similar telling them in time a spot is going to open up and it is theirs.

We also have to keep in mind the only time Exum was truly ever healthy was playing in Europe, where the season has 40-60 games, and the travel is much much lighter. Back in the NBA he picked up long-term injuries very quickly again. Not sure you can rely on him unfortunately.
