Jimmy Butler Watch
LOL, you go Memphis. Get Butler or a playoff run and then are like if you really don't want to be here you can opt out Smile

***************
Windhorst: “The Grizzlies are lurking in Butler trade talks, sources said, and have been in contact with the Heat during the process.” … “Sources have theorized that if Memphis can acquire him for a playoff run & also free cap space this summer, that's where their interests might lie”

The Heat are suspending Jimmy Butler indefinitely after the star walked out of shootaround when informed he would be coming off the bench moving forward.

Someone is going get him for pennies on the dollar.

And he's going to push someone to a championship or completely ruin their franchise.  I'm just ready for the trade so the rest of the trade dominoes can fall. We're 10 days away and this is holding everything up.

Not a chance. I think Riley is completely comfortable with banning him for the rest of the season and daring him to opt out in the summer. Not trading him saves the owner like $25M this season. I actually think it´s the opposite. You´ll have to overpay for a disgruntled player on a hypothetically expiring contract to get him.

Personally I want them to hold on him and then let the drama continue in the offseason.  Although, typically when a player goes to these lengths, they eventually back down and move him.  I would think it would be better to hold on to him if there were no good deals out there.   You may get some more options this summer.    Although, i expect he is moved.

He'll go somewhere in some big 4 or 5 team trade and the team that gets him will give up expiring contracts and trash picks.  It'll be the Suns or Bucks or another top contender. It'll either work or be a complete bust.

No one is overpaying for Jimmy. Heat have lost leverage IF they want to get rid of him.  Riley and the Heat can just send him home for the season, and thats fine. But if they want him gone, it'll be for whatever they can get.

with an update on the Jimmy Butler saga:

- The Heat have lowered their asking price as they look to find a deal.

- Bradley Beal is viewed as the most untradable contract in the NBA, which is making the Suns’ pursuit extremely challenging.

- Teams who previously believed they were out on trading for Butler now think it’s possible as Phoenix’s hopes to move Beal dwindle.

Everything is an overpay for Butler. Only reason Miami will trade him (for expiring deals) is that they know he will NOT opt out in the summer, when he finds out that nobody offers him even 50M for two years; maybe for three years, after this sh*tshow. If he guaranteed Miami that he opts out this summer, they might just run it down. You just can´t have him around another 18 months.

The Miami Heat are interested in Julius Randle, per @IanBegley

“Keep an eye on Minnesota in a Butler deal. In the offseason, the Heat were one of the teams that expressed interest in trading for Julius Randle, per SNY sources. Randle has remained on the Heat's radar during the Butler saga, sources say. I don't know if there are any active trade talks between Minnesota and Miami. But the two teams have been in touch on Butler trades.”

Oh I never really thought about this avenue. Wolves are in cap hell. Butler is essentially an expiring+. If he declines and becomes a FA, they clear up 40+ mil of space and are out of the 2nd apron. If he picks up his option, great you have him for another year before he’s done.

I view this as a pure salary move for the Wolves. Only downside is he may potentially nuke your locker room.

I wanted a backcourt of Luka&Edwards, since I first saw him play in highschool. Good to see Minny making moves to get us closer. Seriously they dump Randle for Butler´s expiring what do they have left? It´s basically Edwards and McDaniels and nothing else. Randle and Butler will be gone. Conley retired. Gobert will be how old? 35-36 years. That franchise is dead again and Edwards becomes KG.

Minn can't salary match Butler. They are too far over 2nd apron to get below it, which means they can only do 1-for-1 with 100% match, and they don't have any salaries the same size.

Beal to GS? Not sure I see how that helps them. He'd probably fit and all, but I don't know that it fundamentally changes their chance to compete in any meaningful way.

A three team trade, or does he mean heat are talking to both teams as potential butler destinations?

3-team trade, but didn't specify on any details of who would be going where.

I assume Beal would head to the Warriors. Why the Warriors would want Beal is something I can't really Bealieve.

Curry is seen as this clean guy, but he did not have much too complain about until now, cause the team has always been contending. I think he´s putting pressure on them to make a splashy move. I assume Warriors are thinking they´ll feed him for the next 2-3 years with some vets, but keep their cap completely clean for 2026/2027ish and start a full rebuild from there.

Why Beal? Reasons above and I assume he´ll be very affordable. They probably even get a future asset out of this or another player from elsewhere to take on Beal, but no way they are getting better short-term in a Beal for Schroeder + Wiggins + Payton/Anderson/Moody talent swap.

If we theorize it is a 3 way with
Butler to PHX
Beal to GS
[some package of players] to MIA
...then it's hard to see GS's interest. For all the salary they have to cobble together to match, it's questionable if GS gets enough value in Beal, and his massive salary would clog their cap for 2 more years.

What seems more likely would be a 2-team trade that's a 2-for-2, with PHX left out, and Wiggins + Green going to MIA, and Butler + ____ to GS.

The tricky part is that both teams are rules-limited in what they can take. MIA can't take back any extra. GS only has a small sliver of room under Apron 1, so they are in the same boat. That means an exact dollar match would work, but no that's not really available.

However there has been a rumor that GS is shopping Looney in a salary dump, to get under the tax line which they really want to do, to reset their repeater penalties. Once they did that, it could ease the restrictions enough to make something like that 2-for-2 possible.
