Trade & FA 2024-25:

I agree with this... and I also think Maxi might have value in some situational lineups. Green, on the other hand, is a wing replaceable by a combination or either Grimes or Exum.

Green's energy had value, but it was never channeled consistently.

But Green has more trade value imho. Not going into further legality detail, but many rebuilding teams would probably be interested in his potential, if they decide to trade an more expensive piece.

Yes, I completely agree with you there.
Wiggins had a terrible year last year by all accounts. When you take a closer look at their lineup data it suggests he was a better fit than Klay. If you’re building around Steph the best players were Draymond, Podz and Kuminga. Wiggins was positive but Klay had a negative rating with Steph.

The offensive rating stays roughly the same, but the defensive rating jumps to 117 with Klay out there.

Why would Luka and Klay work when Steph and Klay did not work?

The evidence shows that Wiggins was better. The eye test showed that both players are bad

This is all just a bad dream and we’re doing this to help Klay get paid or something as a favor so we have to make it look real by using Stein

He is one I've been interested in since the Finals ended. But, DJJ is part of the core of this team. I'm fine with Klay in the $16m-$18m range. But, when it gets up over $20m count me out. I'm also fine with Josh going out in a S&T. But, to start including an asset that hasn't been replaced (1st round pick) is where you lose me. Green has already been replaced with Grimes.

Green can't be S&T.

Naji is at least as much of a defensive force as DJJ.

Better rim protection in Dallas will help. But it's going to take season-long buyin from Luka on defense. No more taking stretches off.

Do we think that's a likelihood?

I'm still in the optimistic camp that these Dallas decision makers know that what DJJ gave them defensively was a key part of the puzzle. Why else would they be poised to offer him a big chunk of the MLE, if not the whole thing? You don't do that if you're not intending to play him a lot next year.

I think with Thompson, they're essentially trying to replace Hardaway with someone they think they can actually play. If they're wrong, they're wrong, but some of the contract options being discussed are movable if it doesn't work, imo.

There has been more talk today about the possibility that Klay would sign for a number not far above MLE, and that surprises me.

As DS noted, I didn't think Klay's and/or DJJ's demands would both fit into a 26M-ish opening. Now, maybe they will after all, which would be great!

DJJ has been a big help last year, nobody is denying that, but it’s not like he’s a perfect two way building block. He has flaws as a player, that’s why he was a minimum player last year and that’s why he’s probably an MLE type player even after his breakout year during the prime years of his career. That’s still a good player to have and a huge success for him individually given where he was 12 months ago but the world doesn’t end if he leaves.

And the crazy thing: despite the Klay-thing it doesn’t even look like DJJ is leaving. Maybe that changes in 9-10 hours but as of now nothing has been lost.

We’ve had MUCH worse dumb crap happen over the last dozen offseasons, maybe it’s because I’m getting older myself, but JFC relax a bit.

To me DJJ leaving is as bad as loosing out on Jeremy Lin 10 years ago in the aftermath of the VAJ disaster. It hurts for sure but big picture-wise other things are a lot more important and you’d still have plenty of avenues to replace him.

Heck they already made a nice move with Grimes. That’s a solid option to help with wing defense already and there would be more to come anyway.

I think this right here is the plan IF DJJ leaves:

Hardaway ==> Klay (SnT

Green ==> Grimes

DJJ ==> MLE

I really wouldn’t see where the problem is with that. This isn’t like letting Brunson walk in FA.

POTD. I haven’t caught up on the 20+ pages I’ve missed while being away for a day but couldn’t pass up on replying to this one.

Naji is close but not on the level of defense as DJJ. Green could/would go out in a potential S&T for Klay Thompson.
Find me at Lakersball.com. I'm done with the Nico and the Mavs.

Hesitant on adding Klay as well. GSW system is different from Luka-ball. Takes a different kind of player to be able to play with Luka.

The Mavs as currently constructed Kyrie/PJ/DJJ/etc.. are all ok with Luka having free reign. They're ok with going 3-4-5 possessions not touching the ball watching Luka shoot step back 3's.

Is Klay willing to just stand at the 3pt line while Luka does everything? KP couldn't do it. If the Mavs are upfront with him and Klay is willing to take a diminished role. Go for it.

Does this thing kick off at 3 PM Eastern or 3 PM Central?
Current Klay would be great in like a Sam Hauser role in a playoff rotation and the Mavs do need to get some shooting back after going heavy on defense as of late but it seems like he's still going to get too much money just for his name. Multiyear deal at around ~20m seems pretty bad. I think a lot of needed improved 3 point shooting can come from internal development from the current roster.

I think the whole Gafford convo is worth revisiting. It does seem like the Mavs coaching staff prefers Maxi over Gafford in a lot of matchups and they ended up playing Gafford & Lively way out on the perimeter to start defensive possessions vs Boston like they're Powell a ton. Still say they should keep Gafford at least until the TDL, he deserves that, but if they're gonna end up using him like Powell in their system anyway it may be best to trade him for a big wing/small ball 5 Maxi upgrade.

In 3 1/2 hours.

How many teams will announce deals within the first few minutes? And how many of them will lose a pick?
If GSW gave us a few FRPs for Wiggins, wouldn't that be a better fit than Klay? The good thing about Wiggins is that he's hardly played since the championship season. Lot's of tread left on that tire.

3 PM Pacific. 5 Central.

I think this - of all arguments against getting Klay - is the most understandable to me. We simply don't know how Klay would fit in the Dallas system. It's a gamble.

The other side of this is that Klay has never played with another team other than GS. His entire career is there. We really have no idea how he would operate in this ecosystem because there is no track record of him playing elsewhere.

Multiple people within the organization have told me that they believe DJJ is a done deal so they don’t feel obligated to start free agency with him anymore. There is a mutual sense of loyalty between camps after this season’s success. Jones has made it known he wants to stay.

Good news! I was getting a lot of mixed emotions with each page. If the off-season is adding Klay, Grimes and DJJ with Tim and Green outgoing I don’t know how anyone can be upset. And I’m a big fan of Green, who thinks he’d be great in GS!

I guess I'm the only that's never heard of Josh Mazur before.

not that I have any reason to doubt DJJ is returning.
