It is very rare that rookie can contribute immediately to a contender and it is also possible the pick is a fail overall. Expecting a rookie to play serious starter minutes and contribute is a tall task. Not saying it is impossible, but it is also far from absolutely
2022 players from top 9 picks that couldn't contribute on a contender as a starter in their rookie season: Holmgren (out for season), Sharpe, Daniels
2021: Suggs, Mitchell, Kuminga (barely played his rookie season)
2020: Wiseman, Williams, Okoro, Okongwu, Hayes, Toppin, Avdija
2019: Culver, White, Hayes, Hachimura
I give it a 95% chance a top 10 pick would be traded. I was referring to that rather than a rookie coming in to help.

Lakers dumped Westbrook and received three starter level players for just one pick, which is even top4 protected. This is a kind of move I would expect a competent front office to do.
Unless you expect Luka to demand a trade soon, the Lakers 27 1st is more valuable than a Dallas 27 1st despite being top 4 protected. Lebron will be 42 and Luka only 28. If the only thing the Mavs put on the table is two future picks there is a high likelihood that they will be outbid. Tons of other contenders could offer the same.

Since we mention them, I think they will have only one goal this offseason - get a star or If you’ve read any of my other comments on this you would know it’s not just about the pick going to the Knicks in the trade. If they want it, they pay the price. If not, they get whst yhey want from a 3rd team in the trade who wants the pick.

No because we owe 29 to the nets and because of the protections on the Knicks pick it could still technically be the 25 pick that conveys to them so 26 and 28 are off the table.
One thing the KP trade has taught me is that protections are quite the double edged sword. A future pick with 2 years worth of protections ties up 4 years of picks. Killer seems to be the only one who recognizes simply getting past all that BS will be a win in itself.

Ah ok. In this case I don't think something like number 9 pick in 23 has much more value than lightly protected 25.

I am not dreaming about a star. I doubt anyone would offer much more than Lakers for that package. I also don't really agree on the valuation of top4 protected Lakers pick. If they will be really bad, that pick will be lost for Utah. They have to hope they would be bad but not really bad.

I understood that well. Not sure why you are so sure NY would go for that. They want stars, not number 9 picks.

If they want a star and not the #9 pick, then trade for that star using our #9 pick while giving our pick back to us. For example (only for demonstration purposes):
LAC gets: salary ballast players and a bunch of picks with our #9 pick being the best one
NYK gets: Kawhi Leonard
Dal gets: PG13, our 24 pick back
Once again, I reiterate, this is as example, not a real thought out trade. The limit is your imagination though.

You could probably get the pick back and someone like Mitchell Robinson for #9. Definitely not a star though.

Lol. Where do I sign up for the Tank. Although the deep bench guys may play with more urgency.
Just a horrendous performance against a team you should take to the woodshed. Charlotte got any shot they wanted in the first half. Just easy shot after easy shot. No One is playing with urgency.

NY has as many picks as they want, I don't think they have any need for Dallas one.

It actually looked like they are playing with decent energy to me. Luka definitely has. But they just look completely lost. Like little league playing big guys. Unbelievably bad.

Oh don´t worry. They´ll come back and win this game by 2-3 points. Finish 9th or 10th, lose the first play-in game, convert the 12th pick to the Knicks and whoever is in 9th or 10th spot will move up to #2 and get Scoot. That´s just the Mavs way. It´s a certainty.

It would alleviate the amount of picks they would need to trade as well so as to use the other assets to make another trade.

Bulls currently up ten against No Blazers. If the Bulls win the Mavs can finish in 10th spot on their own power.
We´d already be in 9th, if not for that idiot Davis.

I’ve been anti tank but no other option now. If the Mavs send a lottery pick to New York then this season is a franchise killer. Cuban needs to sell. He’s ruined this franchise. The refs can pretty much declare open season and no one cares because he’s dragged the franchise’s reputation into the ground.

Here is another indicator how bad this team really is:
Play in the only division with two sub 20 wins teams
Play in the only division with two sub 30 wins teams
Play in the only division with four losing teams
The Raptors are in last place in their division by 3.5 games, but have as many wins as the 2nd best team in our division.
Playing in any other division, would probably be worth another 2-4 losses and put us in Pacers/Wizards territory.

Looks like a team that should have been tanking since january but refused to accept that they suck. Followed it up with an all in trade that didn´t change a thing. Still refused to tank. Now gets overtaken by teams that wanted to tank but simply have too much talent (Jazz, Thunder).
They cannot afford to win another game this season. Bring out the big guns. Time to unleash McGee.

They can just tank by simply continuing to play Luka and Kyrie. This team is terrible as a whole when both play.

Does anyone still want to debate about where this team needs to go over the last 8 games?
They just aren't a good team. Pull the plug on this ugly season, and grab a top-10 pick while it's within reach. (Hopefully it will be a very long time before they are in this kind of draft position again.)
0-8 to end the season should get them low enough to get a pick. And who knows, maybe this can be the year they stumble into lottery luck and land in the top 4.

This has been painfully obvious most the season.
