I was going to say Marion but forgot that was a sign and trade deal...

What is more depressing would be thinking that you could probably argue our second best signing would be Chandler Parsons.

It was a S&T so I count that more in the "trade" pile. Depending on how you classify that move he would have to be the top of the list.

Pretty insane how long we’v been doing this FA-stuff.

DWill
Dwight
Parsons
Melo
Whiteside
DeAndre
Aldridge
Conley
Barnes
Kemba
Danny Green (lol screw him)

At some point we were shooting for all those guys. Barnes and Parsons actually got here.

I‘d be pumped to hear them just move on from this publicly but it doesn’t feel like we’re done chasing stars.

Yeah, a bit different I guess, but he had to want to play here. He agreed to play here and then they worked out the trade, so I'm counting it.

But yeah, the free agency history isn't elite, lol.

I hated post championship plan powder. But giving up on free agency for ever seems a bit drastic. And 2021 seems like the exact worst time to give up on free agency.

Actually like the best time. Not a single max worthy player available. Best options are RFA and that´s always a bad idea.

This is why I've always been team operate over the cap.  It just feels like we've always been productive when we go that route and have run into issues trying to utilize cap space.  Once we bring people here we've done a great job resigning so I've always been comfortable with the idea just building a roster through trades.

People seem very concerned about Luka's supermax coming down the pipe to which I just think that it's not a huge deal if you operate over the cap and have an owner willing to pay the tax for a contender.

2021 FA looks as bleach as ever. I guess you can try to sign Evan Fournier but are players of that caliber worth giving up on being an over the cap-team? I don’t think so.

I wished we’d get back to the old big spending-days. Preserving caproom every summer comes at a hefty price in terms of teambuilding. So far it hasn’t nearly been worth it over this decade full of attempts.

Dropping all our bird rights to gamble on an RFA like Collins always scares the crap out of me knowing the incumbent team can always match and we just lose 72 hours of player movement.

The THT poison pill idea honestly scares me just as much (thought he seems like a great fit here).

To me it feels like the best move is to keep the continuity train going at team friendly prices and wait til we can package more FRPs again and strike when the iron is hot via trade.

Gortat, Parsons & Barnes.
We love going after RFA. Though GSW later dropped QO for Barnes once KD choose them.

We'll see. During the summer free agency and trades are all intertwinned. The Mavs have Luka established as a perennial MVP candidate, one of the top guys from whom to recieve a pass and one of the top coat tails to ride to success. And they have a tone of flexibility with cap space and tradeable contracts. They have to try to move the franchise forward this offseason. They have to try. Whether that comes via signing or trade or trade caused by the threat of signing, or some other mix, I care not.

Hah.  So true across all sports.  Cowboys fans are even worse.

Veteran coaches dont like playing rookies because they make mistakes.  Green wasnt even a high pick and universally regarded as being years away.  Obi Toppin is already 23 years old and barely playing for the Knicks.   People think it's a Carlisle/Mavs problem but it's really not.

The Heat and Raptors happen to be really good and developing young guys and incorporating them early.  They're the exceptions.

I do agree with this.  Said so MANY times before the draft.  Trade #18 for a sure thing.  Donnie has a terrible history of drafting later on in the first round.

Not that I've given up on Josh Green.  I just think the % chance JG is a good rotation player <<<<<<<< the % chance the guy they could have gotten for the #18 pick would be a good rotation player.

If we ended up keeping this squad together and added a rotation player with the MLE would that be considered a step forward for you?  I'm big on continuity and I also think this roster is much more competitive than the general public gives it credit for but curious about your take.

I just think we should be biding our time until we have enough assets to pull off more of a blockbuster trade the way we did with KP as opposed to incremental movements that would lighten our war chest of trade assets.

I got a million thoughts I'd like to get off my chest but I'll just stick with what's being discussed.

I get confused as to fans' frustration of the rookie's minutes this year as we are clearly in a little more of a win now mode compared to recent years and we also seem to be, you know, winning now when the roster is full strength and squeezing Green and the rest of the bunch out of the rotation.  I think we just caught a lot of bad luck this year with the G League not being what it normally is because I feel that all 4 kids would be getting most of their development there this year, so in that sense the player development has been disappointing but obviously not from any fault of the FO.  I also think it's weird to claim this team doesn't develop rookies when two of our starters were developed in house.

For the rookies themselves I think we have great upside in all 4 of them.  Personally, I think Bey may end up carving himself out a role sooner than the rest out of need (I'm also biased because I live in the Boulder area and saw a lot of him in college and was ecstatic when we landed him in the trade) but think that all showed promise in the bubble.  And although I was very high on the fit of Aaron Gordon as the 4 on this team, I'm glad Green wasn't moved because of the uncertainty around Hardaway's and Richardson's futures here at the moment.  At the very least we have someone we can thrust into those minutes and hope that he can step up if needed next season.  We also didn't really have the ammo to match Denver's offer anyway but that's a different point for a different thread.

I also think us sending out our second rounder shows that we like all 4 of those guys because we're basically saying we don't have roster space for that second rounder anyway because they plan on all 4 being guaranteed next year.

Anyways, these are random thoughts and not directly tied to other posts in this thread but just kind of excited that I'm here moving forward instead of listening to a bunch of reddit posters who have been Mavs fans for 2 and a half seasons screaming to fire Rick.

I definitely agree on Gordon, I think he was the better fit if the choice was between him and John Collins. Aaron Gordon was under utilized in Orlando
