Even with a new front office though, I don't think they trade him to Dallas even if Dallas had a legit offer or interest. Can you imagine being a fan of the Kings and already being upset by passing on Luka only to see Bagley flourish playing next to Luka?
I don't want to rip on your pre draft assessment, but this is what he was: A dynamic offensive talent that could not shoot or play defense. That is a tough fit in todays modern game. I felt like there were three guys clearly better than the rest (Luka, JJJ, Ayton) and then a huge gulf. Picking at 5 I had little hope to get one of them as Bagley was the only hope going ahead of any of them.
There has been a lot of talk about the Suns, Hawks and Griz running better organizations than the Mavs, and there is definitely some truth to that, but they all had a chance to get Luka at a smaller asset cost than it took the Mavs, and yet it was Donnie who pulled the trigger. I still lean towards most of our issues from a FO perspective being at Cuban's feet, and we would probably have been a lot better off if he had let Donnie be a true GM.
