From Dallas perspective I would like to spend roughly 10 mil of cap space so that remains enough for a good FA target (not counting JRich). Than there is another sneaky angle. If Holmes resigns with Sacramento, Charlotte can convince themselves that Harrell or Drummond are cornerstone centers on a contender or look for a trade partner.
Options I would look into it:
1. Bagley into our cap space for a second rounder or so.
Mavs have roughly 22 mil of cap space left, perhaps enough for "DeRozan type" (or you dump Burke for more). We get a year to see if Bagley can show why he was picked before Luka. I don't really think Sacramento is willing to give up Bagley that easy.
2. Kleber and Burke for Hield
Mavs keep 20+ mil of cap space, Sac gets enough to keep Holmes and a floor stretching defense playing wing. I guess Collins is out of reach to cover the PF hole but Hield-Luka-Conley or Lowry guard/wing rotation would be interesting. DFS and rMLE (Tucker?, Bjelica?, Lyles?) would have to cover the hole at PF.
3. In option 3 Sacramento gives up on Holmes and trades Hield and Bagley for KP. Mavs keep 34 mil of cap space to bring in two wing defenders (I would give Bagley a full time shot at center for half a season). Lets say Conley and Theis/OPJ/Burks.
I think Bagley is a very good buy low candidate. He hates it there and definitely isn't resigning. His shot is developing and can potentially be really good soon. Has a decent chance at becoming better than Collins without the max deal. He should be able to be the 4 alongside KP, maybe a small ball 5 for some matchups but not frequently imo. Trade for him to get his bird rights and take a chance on 1 year of development, could pay off huge. Injuries are a problem though so hopefully Maxi is still there as a backup.
I think you could possibly figure something out with Buddy+Bagley while still keeping KP. They are no doubt trying to get off of the Buddy contract because they got Fox+Haliburton and they are about to start paying Fox his max. Give them a deal based around Jrich expiring if he opts in or maybe a SNT with THJ in a 3 way perhaps. Buddy can take THJ's role here, he's got a little more length even as well. They mostly want cap relief to get off that Buddy deal so just need to find some expirings to give them and/or picks. If they can get rid of Buddy without having to use their 9th overall pick, I think the Kings are happy.
