Led the league in BLK% in his rookie year, was 2nd in the league his sophomore year, was 9th in the league this down year. He's averaged close to 2bpg and 1 steal per game in less than 30mpg. Dude is a defensive talent and an incredible lob finisher.
I see a lot of similarities in JC and Lauri. Both are very young (Lauri is 23, Collins is 24), both have an outside shot, both can take it inside when they have to. Collins is a much better interior player, while Lauri is a much better outside shooter.
If you still hate the comparison then call Lauri a younger version of Gallinari.
Having a positive DBPM for a big does not mean much as that stat tends to be slanted towards big men. This year he was 26th out of all centers. Last year he was 47th. His block rate has gone down every year as he faces better competition, and their defense was significantly better when Noel took over. He is a very good backup center and in a couple of years he may be ready to be the anchor on a contending team, but I don't think he is there yet. Besides, if he does turn out to be totally awesome, he is a UFA the following season and we will be over the cap. He will have us over the barrel as we won't be able to replace him if he walks. That is the very situation we are trying to avoid with Brunson by trading him.
I think the issue with both of those comparisons (Collins and Gallinari) is I don't think he has the mobility to guard the perimeter when necessary. Honestly a more accurate comparison might be an older Gallinari. That can still be a useful player, but it is an offense only player on a team that already has Luka (and in this scenario) CJ. That is plenty of offense. What the team needs around those two guys is defense. I don't want to be another Portland.
