Okay so I think I get it. The Gilbert Arenas rule means that Lakers have a good chance to keep him if they are will to use their MLE which they probably are.

I imagine the game-plan is resign Schroder, do probably full MLE to THT if his breakout year continues and piece together the rest of the roster with vets willing to sign for vet mins.

You could make it hard for the Lakers to match because of how much money they have committed or at the very least hamstring them for the 3rd and 4th year of the contract. Here is the important part:

Where the Lakers still have an advantage is how that salary counts against their books compared to other teams. If Horton-Tucker signed that offer sheet with another team, the average annual salary of that contract — roughly $20 million — would count against that team’s cap for the duration of the contract. So, not only would the team have to have $20 million in cap space this summer, but they’d have to be okay with having $20 million on their books for the next three summers afterwards.

Comparatively, the Lakers would have the option to have a cap hit of $20 million over four years or they could have the contract count the way it was written, the latter of which would be more likely because of how much salary they already have committed through the 2022-23 season. They also have the luxury of matching whatever offer sheet Horton-Tucker signs.
