As of Wednesday evening, a league source said Dallas appeared to be out of the running for Orlando forward Aaron Gordon, with lead suitors Boston and Denver both prepared to lay a first-round pick and other assets on the table.

And though one league source said Dallas is among six teams loosely engaged in discussions for Atlanta forward John Collins, but that Dallas wasn’t near the front of the line.

Also as of Wednesday evening it appeared other teams were closer pursuers of Evan Fournier of Orlando and Norman Powell of Toronto because of Dallas’ unwillingness to add any of its top nine rotation players to its proposals of a second-round pick for either of those players.

“We’re not opposed to doing an over-the-top move,” Nelson stressed. “But the player’s got to be better than one of our rotation players. Actually, there’s two things: It’s got to be better, and it also can’t cost us three games to integrate this. We’ve got to be able to make up those three games.”
