This reporter is a Knick beat writer, but he laid out the rumored asking price for Beal right now.

"So what would be the trade cost?

Three different executives, who spoke to the News, defined the price as steep. One longtime GM laid it out specifically: three unprotected first rounders, two pick swaps, a young player and an expiring contract. That’s approaching Harden territory. The Nets, as the News reported, had internally discussed acquiring Beal long before exhausting their assets for Harden."

That's certainly a very very very steep asking price. Zach Lavine certainly wouldn't cost that much. But if we assume that's the tippy top end, we can guesstimate that Lavine would probably cost 2 FRP+1 pick swap+Young Player+ Expiring contract. Mavs could certainly do that but it'd be their final all-in move.

 
Thanks for the info.  It is important we realize discussions of Beal and LaVine are like showing up at a Sotheby’s auction with a Home Depot gift card.  There is a pretty good chance you won’t be coming home with a valuable piece of art.  

Our choices are basically to trade expiring contracts for overpaid guys or waiting until this summer and using cap room (while giving up a significant portion of our current core).  There is an outside chance we might trade in-season to get Bird rights on someone the other team doesn’t intend to retain (which begs the question as to whether our big move should really be getting someone that their current team no longer wants to pay).
