Imho, there is absolutely no way JRich gets traded, unless it is a third star we are talking about. I just don't get the amount of "hate" against him. His defense is way better the numbers might show. He is basically the only true 2 way player we have. He might not have been what we hoped due to bad shooting start, but this will not be solved by trading him for one way specialists like Fournier. I like Fournier a lot actually, but we could certainly say goodbye to any hopes of playing good defense if we trade JRich for him. JRich has actually improved a lot offensively in February. He is shooting 34 % from three in 7 February games. His TS is at 62 % and he has over 4 assists during this span. Sure, we played bad defensive teams, but this just indicates more time is needed to pass any serious judgement.
Biggest Mavs defensive problem is the drop PnR defense. Both KP and Kleber are awful at it lately. PnR maestros like Curry and Young are killing us. I wonder how much have the 4 games (in our last 6 games) against them affected JRich post Covid or February defensive numbers and how much really is his fault for those phenomal Young/Curry offensive performances. I am affraid what Lillard will do tonight. Another 60 point game?
I think a couple of good games made you seriously overvalue Brunson. I clearly remember half the board would trade him for a bag of peanuts after first couple of games of the season. I think our guard rotation is actually good. If I would be looking to improve this rotation in a win now move, Brunson would be the "victim". It is just too difficult to replace THJ flamethrower shooting or find a better two way player who could be a long term solution. Lowry is great, but we can hope for his services for a couple of seasons at most. Everything looks rosie on the offensive end atm, but we were playing some BAD defensive teams. Let's wait for a couple of tough games against good defensive teams Memphis, Houston, Boston and Philly, which will provide much more reliable picture, if Mavs need a (better) secondary facilitator or not. Non Luka offense is still bad despite not playing guys like Iwundu or Green anymore.
Personally I think guys like Thad Young could be nice for our rotation, but they don't really move the needle and I wouldn't really waste assets on them. DFS and Kleber still leave a lot to desire for Mavs, so I would look for a serious upgrade on those positions. Or secondary facilitator. I don't get the Aminu idea. Thats like MKG experiment we did last season.
I would do two types of moves at TDL:
1) Trade for a serious top 50 player or
2) marginal improvement, assets used only if we get rid of 2021 money (Powell)
I think number two is more likely (or even no move), as Mavs seem to trust this group. They have for 2 seasons now.
I project following teams to be sellers, unless their results drastically change in the next month: Chicago, Orlando, Cleveland, Detroit, Houston, OKC. Washingotn and Minny are sort of a mistery to me. Not really much I like there anyway. The rest will look for (at least) equal return in terms of player ability.
