I can see the Mavs prying him away with a Max offer next summer if ATL doesn’t want to match, but that seems like a big risk, planning wise. Now, if we get there without coming across a more stable opportunity first, he’d absolutely be my big free agency swing.
I too like Collins and see him as the best summer FA here. Heck, he may be the best here period if you exempt unrealistic all-star types.
One thing that might help us is Atlanta is past the stage of needing draft compensation. They want players, so the OKC's of the world can't just overwhelm them with picks and get this done. The next question is timing. I think it would clearly be in the Mav's best interest to do this in-season. Even a 0-6 level FA is going to be costly to the roster.
What timing is best for Atlanta? Well, they can certainly get value in the summer (like Sacramento almost did with Bogdanovic). The salary matching is easier and with so many teams with cap room, BYC won't be an issue. But, salary matching isn't terrible now with the ability to throw expiring Snell into the equation.
Schwartz might be a help here. Or, Collins may view himself as not needing or wanting to play next to a scoring big. I think that is the calculus C. Wood did. His star shines much brighter without competing with KP for touches. People have criticized the Mav's for not going after C. Wood. I think C. Wood didn't want to come here. We gave his old team a package that would have easily been enough to land him. Everything was in place seemingly except a desire to be here on C. Woods' part. Not sure how Collins sees himself.
