Cool but I bet every team in the league has a record that looks like that scoring 140 points.

I'm actually concerned that they lost one when scoring 140....

Just like that from 14th to 9th in the West. Next game vs 5th place blazers to close the gap. Still think we finish 4th/5th. Let’s go mavs

Tied for 14th-best record in the league.  Big Grin

It would be a small miracle for us to beat the Blazers, but if we can take care of business going into the Celtics game, we'll still be above .500 by then.

Mavs have four more games against mediocre teams before the tour against East great. Sure we can expect a loss here and there, but I think a score of 6-10 over 10 game stretches till end of the season might be enough to put them in the top 6.

Portland will pick our PnR "defense" apart and Covington will certainly make KP work for his baskets. One might wonder if it wouldn't be better to sit KP out this one Smile But since Portland defense isn't any better, it might come down to who will score more again. Mavs are doing great in this department lately, confidence growing with every win. But defense will be needed, if they want to become contenders. Haven't seen much of it lately.

We obviously won't know how good or meh this team is for at least another month or so. Gotta see how we play against the league's best. But something to think about:

In the month of February, the Mavs

Offensive rating = 122.6 (3rd best in the league)

Defensive rating = 122.6 (2nd worst in the league)

For all the investment on defense last offseason, and the relentless emphasis of defense by Carlisle this season, the Mavs still suck at that end. For the season, the Mavs are 5th worst in defense, which is worse than last year.

Carlisle said last night that unlocking the defense is the key, maybe they turn it around. But thus far it's a red flag despite the easier schedule lately.

My one hope for the defense is that many of the most important defenders -- JRich, DFS, Maxi, and even Powell -- were hit hard by Covid and the resulting lockdowns. Maxi is clearly laboring and out of shape, and I have no doubt that the other guys are still not 100% even if it's not as obvious. Hopefully the defense will eventually pick up in the same way that the offense is now coming around.

We only play 2 defensive minded players. The MBT fucked up in the draft. They added Richardson and that is it. James Johnson has not been a lockdown defender since his Miami Heat days. KP and Dwight Powell are trash defensively. Maxi is good but he is only good against certain type of twitchy players. We saw Zion bully him last night. We saw Cousins bully this team as well.

The Mavs are bad because they still have a personnel problem.

Aside from one transcendent player at a time, you could argue they've had a personnel problem (in the general sense, but as the source of our usual problems) since 1998.

We have a GM who is great at finding one transcendent player per generation, but generally terrible at building teams around that guy.

Edit: and yes, we did foul up the draft. I'm ready to concede that now with regard to Green and Terry. I think the jury's going to be out on Tiger for a while.

Our defense was showing signs of being quite good before the 1-2 punch of losing all our best defensive players to COVID + KP coming back and playing terrible defense. Ideally both of those problems can be solved with time.
