Ultimately Portland won because they offered their 2021 1st round pick as well as their 2020 1st round pick. 2021 picks are at a premium around the league because everyone expects this draft class to be loaded. So Dallas hasn't just been sitting on their hands unwilling to attempt any moves because they've been hoarding cap space for Giannis.
I agree.
What I see (which might be confirmation bias, but I hope not) is that unlike during the Dirk era, the Mavs are targeting specific paths they think will move the needle and NOT overreacting when those paths aren't immediately successful. I think they're being financially responsible, and I believe that will HELP early team-building, not hinder it.
There will come a time (fairly soon) where the best thing they can do is abandon financial responsibility and overspend like crazy, and I'm not sure that Cuban is willing to do that, even when appropriate. I hope he is. But the period of time between Luka's draft night and this moment, right now, has not been that time, imho.
