As far as plan powders go, there is a HUGE difference.

First the inside view: In 2013 Dirk was already an elderly player with his arrow pointing down. The Mavs had NOTHING else to offer except money and hopes and dreams of a Shark Tank owner.

Second the outside view: Dirk was under appreciated. The nba media didn’t hype up Dirk at all. In fact, most media tore him down until late into his career. Most players tried to punk him, until he punked all of them in the end. But these players fall for all the media hype shit just like the fans do. 

Now the Luka view: We have ALL the momentum. We have the hype. We have a 25 yr old unicorn and an 21 yr old MVP. We have a stacked roster. We gave the Clippers a run for their money and we have a shot at a championship THIS season. The media would Love for Giannis to join Kp and Luka. All Giannis friends are probably telling him to do it. I bet he has former players telling him it’s the best move. All around there are just so many factors that could make this happen.

 I think that´s exactly what the Mavs are aiming at with their moves. Their goal this off-season is to be within a

trade-window of Giannis max money. They could sign S&T another player to something like roughly 62/4 (Bogdanovic range) to stay right on target.

For that reason, they´ll definitely still spend the remaining MLE.

To sum up 2021

Plan A: Giannis
Plan B: mixture of young FA targets (Jarrett Allen/John Collins/Lauri Markkanen) and retaining Richardson
Plan C: retaining all our own free agents

So yes on the surface it looks like Plan Powder, but the flexibility and roster underneath is so much better this time.
