They definitely had a plan for a long time, it just didn't really work from 2012-2018 and wasted most of Dirk's late prime following the championship.
Even the year before we got Luka the Mavs didn't tank seriously enough and almost blew it. Thankfully, we had 3 teams dumb enough to pass on Luka and the rest, as they say is history. KP was a masterful move as well. Even if you have concerns ab him long-term the deal was an absolute steal. We got a max player, all-star 23 yr old for expirings, a couple contract dumps and a couple first round picks?
That + the Luka move bought Donnie another 20 years.
