A TRADE HAS HAPPENED

Justin Patton is an interesting player. He's barely played any minutes in the NBA, much like Roby. Thankfully it's basically a 1 for 1 swap and OKC is giving us money.

If Patton does ever see the floor I'd be shocked.

So Mavs Twitter is saying that this is just a roster clearing move since I guess it's cheaper to waive Patton than Roby.

He is going to get waived.

So what I like about this is that it confirms the Mavs will be adding at least 2 players. Patton is one spot. I could see the Mavs doing 10 day contracts to get a body in until the TDL.

Lee for sure will be the other spot. Eventually we will add a big and wing hopefully of some quality. Mavs don't necessarily have to trade off anyone even Broekhoff who is injured and presumably a guy they'd like to keep.

So does the cash mean there’s a 3rd team, one for whom a double cash contribution (from Mavs and from OKC) is enough to get them to take on Lee’s contract in some some 2 for 1 deal? Thus we need the cash and roster space more than a late 2nd round project?

Huh? I am pretty sure this is just 1 single move that pays OKC a little bit to get a player they can waive for cheaper. Not sure if Mavs will have any dead cap money since Patton's deal was not guaranteed past this year. Roby obv had a big deal (kind of a dumb deal maybe?) that would have had a decent chunk of dead cap. Something you want to avoid if you can help it.

I am happy the Mavs aren't going to waste any spots on developmental players for now anyway. I also don't expect them to draft and keep a player with their 2 picks this summer either. I think those will be traded for *something* that isn't a developmental player that will never get any minutes. G league can handle those.

So is OKC helping Mavs on cash/cap or vice versa?

Who makes out best money/cap wise?

While I hope the Mavs learned their lesson from giving that boneheaded contract to Roby something tells me the seeming ease with which they pulled this off will mean more are coming in the future.

Boneheaded contract? It was merely front loaded. Year 2 at the min and 3&4 at the min unguaranteed. Makes the K eminently tradeable and tradeable for more money than you could take back otherwise. Plainly it wasn’t hard to unload.

OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma City Thunder have traded Justin Patton to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for small forward Isaiah Roby. The Thunder also sent cash considerations to Dallas in the deal. This was first reported by Shams Charania of The Athletic
Roby was the 45th pick of the second round. A three-year letterman at the University of Nebraska, he was drafted by the Detroit Pistons before being moved to the Dallas Mavericks, who relegated him to their G-League affiliate, the Texas Legends.

The 6-foot-8 small forward has appeared in nine games this season with the Legends, averaging nine points and seven rebounds.

Roby suffered from plantar fasciitis in his right foot at the beginning of the G-League season which caused him to miss the majority of the year up to this point.

Roby is in year one of his four year contract. He is scheduled to make $1.5M this season with next year’s contract being fully guaranteed at $1.8M.

Per Bobby Marks of ESPN, Oklahoma City’s tax bill drops from $2.3M prior to the trade to $2M, with the franchise being $801,066 over the threshold.

Oklahoma City could move big contracts — forsake this season — or move a minimal contract — a Deonte Burton-type — and keep going with this playoff push, while getting under the luxury tax.
Of course, prior to the offseason trades of Paul George and Russell Westbrook, the Thunder expected to be a luxury tax team for at least one more season. With the franchise moving in a different direction since July, plans have changed. OKC is not known to make salary dump-moved for the sake of shedding costs.

Seems like OKC is taking a flier on a young player and giving up someone they thought wouldn't play another game in the league.

Mavs basically trade Roby for Cash. Thunder get a young big, which they need.

OKC is now in the tax threshold, so they're definitely not done. Mavs take a small hit this year, but free about 2 million in space next year.

WELP THERE IT IS.

I wonder what the Mavs are giving up?? Hopefully nothing. WCS is a knucklehead, but he is a rim roller.

I would assume we’re giving the Dubs back their 2nd...

Has to be just for cash considerations, I hope.

WCS makes 2.2M this year and 2. 3M next year.
