Playoff Rotation
#1
So, I sorted through some lineup data and wanted to come up with a possible playoff rotation.

There are 6 non-Luka minutes where they can play small ball.
There are 8 non-Kyrie minutes where Exum is on the floor with either Gafford or Lively. I added available lineup data for both.

I want to see the team at full strength, including Exum, for a good 10 games before deciding what I think on this topic, but I have a feeling Hardaway is going to play a lot more than people want or think.

I know you’re probably right about THJ. It’s just maddening!

"Keep shooting, Timmy!" & "Ice, ice, ice"

That's the quality of our coaching and you will see it in the resulting rotations. The other night was the final nail in my personal coffin on Kidd as a coach. His rotations were just ABSURD.

I pray he is just experimenting, but at this point, we should be winning games for the standings and it should be obvious to anyone, that Lively has to play bigger minutes, Maxi/PJ-pairing looks great and Timmy should not see the court in meaningful (closing) minutes. Luka and Ky are offense enough, Surround them with any combination of Green, DJJ, PJ, Maxi, Lively, Exum and MAYBE Gafford (against a bruising big) and you'll be fine. I have no clue, what Timmy offers to add in those kind of situations.

Luka 40 Exum 8
Kyrie 40 Exum 8
Green 36 DJJ 8 Exum 4
PJ 36 Maxi 4 DJJ 8
Lively 30 Maxi 18

Starters:
Luka
Kyrie
Green
PJ
Lively

Bench:
Maxi
DJJ
Exum

With Gafford and Hardaway having anywhere from 5-10 min games to 25-30 depending on matchups. I could see games where either gets inserted into the main rotation for even a whole series

I.e. Gafford would perhaps play big minutes against a team with size like Minnesota. Hardaway against a team packing the paint or if the offense needs a jolt with some shooting. But if teams like the Clippers are running us off the 3pt line Hardaway should sit.

This all depends on health and how Exum looks when he returns

Playoffs? Lol. 50-50 right now. But given the coaching track record, most likely result is a play in miss.

What a difference 6 weeks makes!

From today’s perspective, sure looks like Gafford will play a major role no matter the opponent, and THJ won’t. Plus Kidd’s incorporation of the new fellas looks like coach-of-the-year-type material. Talk about a mid-season makeover!

These February and March posts are tough to read!! So glad the Mavs emerged from their trials with great talent additions, a workable plan and players that believe in each other!

How about this a playoff rotation:

Starters: Luka, Ky, DJJ, PJW, Gaf
Bench: Exum, Lively, Maxi, THJ

Maybe Josh instead of THJ, depending on how he plays when he's healthy

What say you?
Not very astute ^^^^

What says me:

Yes to the above except . . . halfway through first series Exum replaces DJJ in the starting lineup and Josh bounces back to take essentially all of THJ’s minutes.

Doesn’t it kinda depend on matchups? And what the other team is doing?

Of course it does. This was an exercise weeks ago trying to show lineup data a build an 8-9 man rotation. I personally found it interesting trying to see it through the lens of the coaching staff.

A lot has changed since this thread. Gafford for example was 8 min to 0 min. Green 30+ minutes. I don't see that being the case anymore...

Only the starting lineup has enough minutes to take real seriously. But still, those are eye-opening numbers. I especially like how your small-ball numbers seem to support the post I just stuck in a new thread about that group, but with DJJ in Exum’s spot. Maybe I was off by one player?

I like the exercise although most of the lineups are obviously very small sample.  I expect we will see more Lively and Green that what you are showing depending on health.

They have been closing with Exum of late and he's more guard/small ball to me whereas DJJ is a 4/3 type player but here is the lineup data with the different "3's"

Luka - Kai -     - PJW - Maxi

Exum - 36 min - ORTG 135.4  DRTG 93.5  NETRTG 41.9

DJJ - 18 min -  ORTG 110.8  DRTG 57.9  NETRTG 52.9

THJ - 42 min -  ORTG 107.4  DRTG 85.7  NETRTG 21.7

Green - 32 min -  ORTG 120.3  DRTG 126.9  NETRTG -6.6

You can also play small with DJJ at the 4:

Luka - Kai - Green - DJJ - Maxi  (48min)  ORTG 135.0  DRTG 106.3  NETRTG 28.8

Yeah, this stuff is all extremely small sample size but it's all we have thanks to injuries and trades.

No prob.

Just didn’t want anyone getting too excited about any of those numbers.
