Trade & FA 2023-24: Stein-Ingram Trade Inevitable| LAL Want Lebron Back On Any Terms
(07-07-2023, 04:16 PM)F Gump Wrote: From the way those Stein notes are worded, it seems to me he is surmising rather than reporting.

About THJ, it looks to me like his value in the lineup is going to be bigger than what he can bring in trade, because if he's traded it would leave a big hole. I think Stein's note is reactive to that reality. (NOTE: MFR's note says the Mavs have "moved on from ... trading Tim Hardaway Jr" which means Stein thinks he WON'T be traded). That makes sense, since at this point, the Mavs really lack SG-SF sized wings:

PG - Kyrie, Hardy, Curry [all are small, and PG-ish on the floor]

SG - Luka, Exum
SF - THJ, Green

PF - GW, Maxi, Prosper
C - Holmes, Lively, Powell, McGee

But about McGee, while he certainly doesn't seem to have a place in the lineup, I'm not sure what the point would be to waive him. Use him as trade filler? Sure. But if you're paying him anyhow ....

Hardy has a 6'9 wingspan. Even if he's closer to 6'3 than 6'4, he's closer to THJ and Green than Kyrie and Seth IMO. He's not that small.

Also THJ in the starting lineup is a complete non starter no pun intended. The whole point of the entire off season is to ensure Kyrie and Luka are surrounded by defense. If your only changes are Williams and Holmes who we don't know what he is at this point, you haven't done that. The chances THJ is here next season is slim and the chances he starts is zero. Luka and Kyrie will have two defensive wings next to them one way or another.

The Stein comment is pretty clear if read in full and it is NOT saying they have moved on from trading THJ, it's the complete opposite.

I view the current roster as

Luka / Hardy / Exum
Kyrie / Curry
Green / THJ?
Williams / OMAX
Holmes? / Lively / Maxi / Powell / XMcGee

McGee almost certainly won't be here on opening day. The Mavs are seemingly still

-Trying to trade THJ
-Trying to add a starting center
-Trying to add another 3&D wing defender (presumably to take THJ's minutes)

Holmes seems likely to be traded as well if they acquire another starting center because there's no way they're planning on having 5 centers.

I'm assuming most (if not all) of you are AVERSE to having an older, non athletic, non defensive C who isn't an oop threat.

But Olynyk would fit some of the Mavs needs:

* Mavs are trying to move THJ, great if they could get PJ Washington for him, but I'm not expecting it to happen.
* Olynyk is a 4-5 type. Given what the Mavs currently have at C, he is going to start here.
* Olynyk also provides the Mavs with a bigger PF other than Maxi.
* Olynyk is an expiring contract, whereas THJ has 2 years left.
* Olynyk provides the 3 point shooting that Maxi gives. Until Lively proves he can, only Olynyk and Maxi are the true stretch bigs.
* As mentioned, Mavs wants to trade THJ and they also want to trade for a C, I'd rather trade for Olynyk than Jonas (rebounds better but extremely slow).
* The Mavs needs to surround Luka and Kyrie with defensive players, Olynk isn't one of them. But the gaping hole at C justifies his playing time more than THJ who could be languishing on the bench if and when Green takes another step. Keep him and he's your 17M bench dude.
* Ross, Lamb, Jones jr. can take THJ's spot at a cheaper rate. And of course, Grant Williams can play the SF spot too as he has decent handles.
* Those thinking this is a lateral move talent wise, or even thinking THJ is the superior player -- you are right. Neither can play defense, but both can shoot. Olynk doesn't exactly gobble up rebounds, but he is a big body who can help box out the big boys. Maxi isn't half the rebounder Olynyk is, and GWilliams for all his tenacity is severely undersized for the rebounding role. THJ has nothing to contribute in rebounding.

I only saw him say he needs to dig more on Wood. At least on the chat. Unless it was on one of his podcasts. Although, he is saying more or less same things on all channels

So nobody wants this guy as a lot cheaper (to trade for) but effective alternative to Jarrett Allen?

Steins latest substack does mention that both Wood and Saric are only getting vet min interest.

He also mentions the Mavs are still expected to move on from both Hardaway and McGee, not sure where that got miscommunicated.

Would be absolutely thrilled if we were able to get Sims, I’ve pumped his name on here quite a bit. Pairs well with Luka on offense and very switchable on defense.

Doubt he’s a guy who’s available for McGee and 2 seconds though.

I´m fine with signing either to a one year deal worth $4-5M. I feel there is a lot of bounce back potential in Saric.

We'll see.  I just hate it when some players we acquire are overhyped before they put on the jersey.  He's a good player, that fills a role.  But will he the difference between making or missing the playoffs?

Luka and Kyrie, regardless of any other role player move, were always going to be the reason we make the playoffs. Kyrie needs to be available for 65+ games and mesh well with Luka in order for that to happen. Good news on the games played front, all NBA awards can’t go to players playing less than 65 games (there are exceptions) going forward.

That duo just needs the rest of the team to keep the opponent within 10 or 15 points by the last 4-5 minutes of the game. It’s at that point that the duo earns their keep. There is a lot of hope riding on a great bench player (on one of the deepest and best teams in the league) taking on a starting role, 2 rookies making immediate impact, a vet having a resurgent year, a 2nd year player taking a step forward, a 4th year player taking a step forward and injuries not devastating our team like they have every other team in the league.

That’s a ton of hope, and it would be blind homerism to think all of those will happen in the next season. Thinking some of them will happen? Absolutely. Does it matter which ones? Maybe, well, being relatively healthy will cure lots of ills when the other teams get their annual rash of injuries from their usual suspects. Other than that, give me 3 out of the remaining 5 “hopes” and I think that group of role players can do what they’re supposed to do (keep the game close) on most nights.

I agree here, I’m less upset that Thybulle isn’t here and more so that Thybulle isn’t here and they’re still (reportedly) shopping Hardaway which makes a lot less sense unless there’s another wing lined up. I had been vocal about how one of Bullock/Hardaway should probably get moved and whoever was left needed to move to a bench role behind Green but Thybulle would have made both expendable. I’m holding out judgement until the dust settles but moving Hardaway now feels odd unless there’s another wing coming back still, otherwise we’re asking a ton of OMax or simply going to end up playing a ton of small lineups.

Surprised Ayo Dosunmu doesn’t get brought up more on this board. He’s basically another Thybulle so I wonder if they look his way next. Not sure what his value is and what our appetite would be, that Thybulle contract would definitely not get match by Chicago but that’s way too rich for him too.

An alternative to signing Oubre (yuck), Justice Winslow is at least a good defender. The DJJ option is out there too and makes more sense. This is mainly to say, please no more Oubre talk, we’ve done so well so far!

Why not both? I´m only interested in Oubre as a THJ replacement, at which point we can definitely use another irrational confidence scorer. If Kyrie misses time during the regular season, which he has for the last four years, it puts a lot of pressure on Hardy and I´m not even sure who is next up after him. If THJ stays there is very little use for Oubre. I see Oubre in the $6-8M two years with a team option range. That leaves a little money for another signing.

We have Hardy and Curry, I don't think we need another scoring guard off the bench. Better to get another defender.

Ah f***. Danny Ainge had a crazy good summer. I loved their draft and now this. Also shows that we could have gone after Reed. He wasn´t afraid of the competition of Powell/Holmes, if he signs in Utah. People think Utah will miss the play-in, but I don´t know. They were pretty close while tanking most of the last 20 games. To me only Houston, Portland and San Antonio are out of the race before it begins.

Wow, what a smart poison pill. MUCH more likely to affect Philly (if they match) than Utah.
