Mavs twitter goes crazy tomorrow when Powell gets the start.  Only to see the Mavs win by 40 which makes it impossible for Kidd remove Powell from the starting lineup.

Wood takes this as a slap in the face and immediately starts talking about taking his talents to South Beach this summer.

Mavs back themselves in a corner with potentially losing another free agent and decide to save face by resigning Powell to large extension and then spend the summer talking about how important it is to keep your team captains.

Let the fun begin.

The Jumbotron could fall on Dwight mid game, killing him instantly and Mark would still bring him back for 4 years 44 mil. If you haven’t mentally prepared for this like I have then you haven’t been paying attention.

I can live with the "inspirational scrub" plan for Powell, if he's paid like other inspirational scrubs. (See Haslem, Udonis.) Unfortunately, Cuban is too "smart" to do it like that.

He will absolutely start in place of McGee. I can't wait until folks realize how much he's going to play, even with a fully healthy roster.

Okay, let's be realistic here. It'd be 4 for 44 plus a player option.

With a fully healthy roster, DP will get a lot of minutes??????? If that's what you're saying, I'm not buying. A few here and there, I can envision that. But I don't think he will be solidly entrenched in the rotation quarter after quarter.

So ...
1 - How many minutes are you thinking in the usual game with a healthy roster? ____ [put a number on it]. More than Green? More than Frank? More than THJ or Kleber? More than Hardy?
2 - Where do they come from? (ie, let's see the allocation you expect for the otehrs, to see who you think will be squeezed, so that DP gets his -- because the Mavs don't have minutes to play 10-11 guys a lot)

I think he gets at least a 6-10 minute stint every night, at least for the first 20 games or so, while they "figure it out."

I also think I'll have a hard time keeping my dinner down most nights. Nothing against Powell, it's just the thought of him platooning with McGee that makes me crazy.

KL, that's good theory, except I'm trying to figure out where you get the minutes when all are healthy. Powell ONLY plays if you sit/short someone healthy. But who?

Luka SD DFS RB McG
33 28 33 28 15  =  137

Wood THJ Kleber Green
28 27  23  20  = 98

You only have 5 minutes left over to do all of the following: (a) play some of the players above a few more minutes, (b) give minutes to any of Franky, Bertans, Hardy, Dorsey, Pinson, and © play Powell.

So who's getting shorted so that DP plays?

It would be interesting to see, how many games everyone from the top of the rotation was available. As soon as at least one is missing, you get minutes for other guys.

And "Powellstans" will get their wish fullfiled. With McGee out it is likely he starts today Smile

His assertion was 6-10 minutes for the first 20 games and you've carved out five already.  So, you aren't that far apart.  When THJ has come off the bench the last two seasons, he's gotten 25 and 26 instead of 27, so there is a minute or two.  Maybe Green gets 18 instead of 20.  Maybe DFS gets 32 instead of 33 (the only season he's played more than 32 was when he played 33 last season).  It isn't hard to get to Killer's assertion using your numbers and recent history.

I'm also not sure Wood is getting 28 in the first 20 games.  I think that's probably his season average assuming things go well, but maybe not to start.  It also seems like, based on the televised practice, that Wood may not get the center minutes most envisioned.  That means the potential for 48 center minutes being shared by McGee, Maxi and Powell...at least to start the season.

The trickier part is what combo of players does Powell play with.  If we play four lineups during a game...excluding overlaps (Starters, Finishers, bench with Luka and bench with SD), where does Powell fit.  Powell/Luka was a 2 point positive in the regular season and a 3.5 point positive in the playoffs.  Powell/Dinwiddie was a net neutral in the regular season and a plus 5 in the playoffs.  I like Powell with Luka, but that might be hard to do if Luka continues to play the entire first/third quarter.  The logical place to play Powell is a short run in the second/fourth as a way of setting up a closing lineup that includes Maxi/Wood.  I see those guys and Tim as the first off the bench in the first/third quarters and you have to get them off the court sometime in the second and fourth in order for them to finish the quarters.

I believe the game is on tv tonight.  I have the NBA league pass through Youtube tv, so I think it is on there.   I also believe it is being streamed at Mavs.com.   I am more interested in the fringe guys or bench guys than the high minute players in these early preseason games.

Isn’t there some value in giving PT early on to guys you are trying to shop? If Dwight puts up a few 10/5’s on 15 mins of PT, doesn’t that make it even easier to swap him for something we’re missing?

Other side of that coin, you move Wood into a major role before he inks an extension, you’re just shooting yourself in the foot on negotiations, no?

So why freak out over an extra helping of DP in preseason? You know it’s coming. You can take it.

Everybody knows who Bertans and Powell are. Maybe except for Mavsfans who think Powell is completly useless....

Good point, I just can´t see what kind of trade we could do at the moment.

Powell and a second for Crowder, duh. But the Mavs "aren't interested in Crowder."
