I am not sure they are better positioned. Their main "sidekicks" (Middleton, JRue and Lopez) are aging and they have basically no assets left to improve. They have one distant FRP and 2 SRP to trade. I don't think they can do much more but try again until inevitable comes.

I think they are decently positioned. They handed out a couple of bad contracts (Robinson, Lowry), but they can trade two picks on draft night (2023, 2028) and additional 2030 in the summer. They owe just a 2025 pick to OKC (lottery protected, converts to unprotected 2026 pick if not settled). They are decently positioned for a "flawed star" move as they are always an attractive destination.
